It will be a few weeks before the County issues a sample ballot, but we'll have a few things to vote on in November.

Interesting to see two people running against the incumbent (who is also the Board President) in BISD SMD 2. Also, one person is running against an incumbent in CSISD Place 7.
Any thoughts on the 14 state amendments?

Prop 2 will pass, but it shouldn't. For-profit day care should pay property taxes.

Prop 4 will pass and it is a band-aid on the larger problems of property taxes. Also, increases the appraisal entity governance to four years. I would prefer that they are elected or at least not appointed by the bodies doing the taxation.

I like that they Galveston County treasurer said if elected he'd abolish the position and he's the one pushing to have it nuked. gotta hand it to ol hank for keeping by his word

Quote:

The Texas Constitution provides that the office of county treasurer may be abolished via a constitutional amendment. The amendment would abolish the Galveston County treasurer and authorize the county to employ or contract a qualified person or designate another county officer to fulfill the functions previously performed by the treasurer.

Hank Dugie elected in 2022 is the current Galveston County treasurer. In his 2022 campaign, Hank Dugie called for eliminating the office.

Agreed about Prop 2 but it seems to only allow entities to provide exemption, not requiring them to do so. Wonder how much appetite there is for that ?

I think they will try to do it to allow development of daycares in lower economic areas. The problem with any of these programs is that property taxes are not the difference between being profitable or not.

Where I do seeing it work is allowing businesses to offer free daycare to employees and getting a reduction in property taxes for the area of the day care. That might make sense for the business as a recruitment tool and the property taxes are just an added benefit.
