Heya. I've been browsing the forum for a bit and was hoping to find some social settings for the "older crowd" in B/CS. I've been told 5 Knocks and Murphy's Law are good places, and I've yet to experience the First Friday. Any current suggestions for somebody over 40 to socialize and meet possible friends? I'm a little out of place since I'm not an A&M graduate.

I'm early 30s, but find I relate a little more to that crowd these days.

Would absolutely recommend you check out Downtown Bryan this Friday. ALWAYS a great, diverse lineup of events from art to entertainment (including some pro wrestling by the LaSalle, don't knock it till you try it). Stop by KinderHill by the old Kyle House and get some great beer, too. They also have music bingo on Sundays.

Hershel's (sp) in the Stella Hotel has great cocktails and knowledgeable bartenders in that same speakeasy-ish environment.

Urban Table has a nice little upstairs bar, and we finally got to go to Uncorked's new location in South College Station and I love the environment. Affordable wine flights, too.

Recreationally, Lick Creek Park is a favorite. Even in this summer heat, it's probably one of the cooler parks and trails you can be on right now.

Most of my recs revolve around drinking, I know, but I like my whiskey and I like my beer. What can I say? Cheers!

Sometimes my work friends go to Carneys. I've gone a few times and it does seem like a little bit of an older crowd. Not sure about meeting people.

How about 1791 Whiskey Bar in the George Hotel? When there's no live music, it's quiet and they have an extensive drink menu.

Even with music it's usually a great place to hangout and talk.

Great spot. Knowledgeable staff there, too.

As far as meeting folks... Beyond church involvement, you may try the various rotary clubs, Kiwanis, or Lions Clubs? Lots of more seasoned folks in there but I think you find a good batch of 30-50 in there, too.

Business After Hours by the Chamber can be a good way to network and meet some folks, too. Always free food and drink.

Angry Elephant - they have locations in both College Station and Bryan. I've never been to the Bryan location but we enjoy the CS location.

Just because I'm old enough to have gone to the Hall doesn't mean I'm that old lol

Miss the Hall and the dancing it afforded.

We went to Rockies when it was in the mall several times too. We don't fit the demographic to go to any places like that still here.

The libraries both run book clubs. Not sure what they are currently reading.

I would think that the main places to meet people from about 35 to about 50 would be the large churches have adult unmarried groups and you don't have to be a religious fanatic to belong to many. Also, there are many clubs in town from writers groups, photography, to astronomy, an dozens more. Join volunteer groups such as habitat for humanity, meals on wheels, etc.

Back in the day, (20 years ago), the bar at Outback Steakhouse was a social hub in town. Long before all of the evolution of the present day bar/restaurant scene. With that said, the bar is still there and the food is still good, and I think that socially motivated singles could make it their quasi speakeasy.

I have a retired friend whose "book club" meets at Carney's once a week on Tuesdays. I think they have half priced draft on Tuesdays.
