I know I need an entire new AC system in my house. I've gotten one quote for both standard and multi-stage AC. If anyone has recently gotten their system replaced I would like to ask if you can tell me what the cost for tonnage overall was. If you want to share the company and brand, that would also be lovely. I'm trying to get a feel for the ballpark and how many more quotes I should get. I'm quoted for a 4 ton unit. Thank you all in advance!

You are in peak season where techs are doing 10-20 service calls a day. Regardless of company you will pay a premium on a change out to compensate for 130+ degree attics. If you can put this off til after summer you will get better pricing on a change out

You don't specify gas heat or heat pump. I'm local to BCS and I've recently seen quotes as low as $12k and as high as $22k. The days of HVAC under $10k are gone. New efficiency laws, refrigerant prices sky rocketing, metals are high, labor is high, insurance is high, fuel is high, etc.
I'm still having to adjust to handing customers bids in the teens for an AC system because I know how much it hurts. I can assure you I'm not getting any richer, I'm just using bigger numbers. Financing is becoming more and more a necessity. I'm not sure who you've gotten quotes from but I'd warn you to be careful with certain companies in town that are well exposed. Friday I had back to back new customers that were both getting hosed by the same company. Don't trust them. On the first call his system was 2lbs low on R22 but in great shape otherwise and on the second system (a 3 year old Trane) he has a leaking evaporator coil and was 4lbs low. I'm not perfect and neither is my company but we really really focus on honesty and serving our customers well so that you will remain a customer and tell your friends….on TexAgs lol.
I'm out of town until late next week but I'd be happy to visit with you if you'd like. Email is good.

To answer the OP.
We bought a Trane 5 ton two-stage system for 23K. Replaced all plenums and all duct collars. We also added a return in a room that was getting too hot.
Financed at 0% for 6 years.

I learned a lot about HVAC doing duct cleaning and working for some AC companies a long time ago. A lot has changed but doing research the last few years for friends and myself I figured some things out.

Single stage: Avoid like the plague. They are cheap up front. Money drain long range

Two-stage: The only system I would consider in this region. Huge difference in efficiency over a single stage. Not as much between a two-stage and a variable.

Variable speed: Great system in the right region. The savings return isn't worth the cost compared to a two-stage. I was advised against it by the company even though it was more expensive.
Edit for variable: Some national companies offer huge rebates if you get a variable system. According to the techs, replacement parts for repairs can be difficult to get sometimes.

Both the two-stage and variable have better control over humidity.

As the ac guy said in his post, they are expensive and financing is almost a must for most people. If you get a quote for under 10K for anything other than a single stage builder's grade system, I would suggest asking why it is so cheap.

We had a new HVAC system installed in early 2020. 4 ton Trane XR, 17 SEER, 2 stage. It has been great - Superior Air Repair did the install - great company to work with. It was around 11,000 back then and we paid cash.

I wish that we had replaced ours in 2019 when we first started thinking about it.

I would have saved us over 6K.

In reply to paying a premium I can't speak for other companies but we don't charge a higher price for equipment, we just have to add more labor.
I'd say it takes 30-40% more time when the attics are above 130 which they currently are. We burn through Powerade like you wouldn't believe. My wife has a special hamper for my work clothes as they are soaked when I get home each night.

The financing is what you paid for primarily. The equipment was about 20% higher from year to year but about 15-17% of your total invoice was that 0% for 5 years. There's no such thing as a free lunch. I only offer the 0% when my manufacturer is buying it back and at that point it's not a cost to me or you but they don't offer it all year.

There wasn't much difference between the cash price and the 0% financing. If there had been, we would have paid cash.

The main reason ours was high was when we had to get it. Between the Covid shut downs and the inflation due to the idiot in the White House, prices were just very high.

It would have been less expensive if we had done it earlier or waited until this year.

We had our AC replaced in 2021with an Amana 4 ton variable speed 21 seer for 12.8k. We used Siegert one hour and currently have our maintenance contract with them for this new system.

At the time, this was the best price with a service contract ($179.00/year) and our unit is handling this current Texas heat with no problems. I'm very happy with the choice we made.

The whole sale cost of an outside unit and inside unit have double to tripled in the last 3-4 years. It's crazy. I'm in property management and a jug of R22 runs me about $2k. Which is crazy.

Give air concept a chance to bid - they have been the best value for us the last two units we changed (upstairs and Downstairs) within the last 4-5 years.

Also give AgAcGuy12 a go - he seems fair too

AgAcGuy12 - you should tell us your company name here, so we can refer ppl to you for always being helpful etc.

I dropped the ball on this thread. Thanks for everyone's replies and input. I have a heat pump which I failed to mention. Mine is R-22, and luckily I have a jug so I can wait until the weather is better, and I will. I hated that the tech had to go up there in the first place.

What I'm seeing is that the quote I got was probably fair. I will get a couple more quotes just to be thorough, but if they end up similar I'll just go with the original company. The tech was awesome.

One I'm done with this, does anyone want to buy a mostly full jug of R-22?
