Never had Imperial, but Confucius was amazing. And as a kid, that aquarium they had might as well have been Sea World.

Only Imperial. The Walgreens sits where Confucius Chinese was as well as the original location of the pawn shop, which is now located where Imperial used to be.

I know I wrote about CCC before, the eel, the artwork, etc. but never got a picture for it beyond a phone book advertisement.

I do remember scanning some stuff for Project HOLD years ago regarding some utility project on Texas Avenue that did have a few pictures of the streetside signage, though, but I can't find it.

We always enjoyed it when Howard(?), the owner, would put on a show with his yoyo.

Confucius was wonderful - Best Chinese food ever in B-CS. A lot of great memories of my late father taking me there for the lunch buffet.

It was a small buffet, but everything was top notch. I wish a lot of Chinese places would go back to that model, concentrate on a few things and do them right. The modern model of the Chinese buffet, with its hundreds of items recycled daily (many of them not even Chinese), has destroyed the industry (IMHO).

As for Imperial (where the old J.T. McCords used to be), I used to go there with my ex on a semi-regular basis ( I remember we always used to sit next to the fountain with the Carp fish). The food was good, but not Confucius quality.

Early 80s. We got them, JJ Muggs (where Fudruckers ended up) and Bennigans all within a year of each other.

My SIL's family owned Imperial and it was BY FAR the best in town to me. They got screwed around on their lease and eventually closed but I sure do miss that place.

Imperial was here-

Originally Imperial was in the Post Oak Square shopping center in the space that later became Ninfa's. If you have not been to Imperial in front of Premiere Theater, you should try it out. It is excellent.

Hong Kong was the best Chinese restaurant in town back in mid/late 80's. Was on Texas just down the street from Buddy's Appliances. Also just down the road from Casa Thomas (BEST Mexican restaurant in town back then) which is where a BCS fitness is now

Completely different owners I believe and different restaurants (though the two Fontana's that occupied what is now Torchy's were related, FWIW).

What was the place in late 80s that is where Gumby's is now? I remember going with a bunch of friends and they would hit the table and hard sell the Zombie cocktails? You want zombie, you want zombie..and they would put a hurt on you.

Gumby's has not been where Pepe taco was for years. Gumby's is where Ninfa's & Imperial was on Harvey.
Not sure what was in old Pepe's before it became gumbys and whataburger bought it.
Bring back Danvers.

Pepe's started there when it was built in 1976. I'm not sure when they closed, but I believe it sat vacant afterward until Gumby's moved in. Gumby's was there in the early 2000s and through the mid-late 2000s. So I think it's only ever been those two restaurants.

That all I remembered also but cypress-ag above was talking about zombie cocktails in that location and I was thinking that was something that may have been at one of the many things in the north end slot of culpepper across the street. Was a long list including Padre cafe where my sister worked for several years.
Looks like the Martins owned it until 2018 when Whataburger acquired it and doubt bar establishment would have been in there target lessors.
Maybe he was really talking about current Gumby's location in post oak square after Imperial and Ninfa's. Know was Wolfie's and maybe something else before Gumby's moved when Whataburger acquired the location on Dominic.
Brain cells from the seventies are fading.

Ken Martin opened the two Pepe's in 1976 and closed the one on Dominik and after being vacant for years Bob owner of Gumbys leased it until he moved down in Wellborn and then to Harvey. It has never been anything else. Whataburger purchased it so that no competitor could build there and also they still have plans to rebuild the WB there and turn it around facing South Texas Ave. and the old gumbys would be parking and part of the three lane drive through.

The cocktails were at Danvers which is now Blue Baker.

We loved Confucious... hard to remember that far back and I have wondered if my fond memories were just because it was good and unlimited food.... Good to see others here remember it being great.

Is there a decent Chinese buffett in town now? Please don't say Ye Star..that place was not good.

Danver's was great - roast beef sandwiches, burgers and pitchers of beer! A friend worked there in college and so we got free beer.

Was at Harbor Freight this past weekend and someone is doing something to the old China King Buffet. The backdoor was opened and everything was taken out of it with a big dumpster behind it.

No one really wants buffets anymore due to health concerns.

You referring to COVID???

I think buffets are still a viable option in a college town. My opinion is that the Double Dave's at Texas and Bush was very negatively impacted by not having the buffet available. I get that is it not for everyone, but some people like variety......

Some of my favorite restaurants here in the Dallas area are buffets (Ali Baba; Tokyo One). Prices have obviously gone up due to inflation, but hard to beat the great food and selection as these two places. It's $15-$20 to get a meal at a fast casual sandwich place......

Indian buffet in CS isn't bad. It's in our normal rotation.
