Looking for anyone that can share good nursery/garden centers that are not Lowes or Home Depot. Moving from the NW Houston area and was spoiled with Arbor Gate in Tomball, RCW, Plants for All Season as well as tons of wholesale nursery's that would sell to home owners. I've actually been living here in an apartment for 7 months getting the lay of the land and I really have not found anything.

I hear good things about Producers Co-Op...
All the God's, all the Heavens, all the Hells are within you.

Perfect start, I've slipped into old man phase now and love hitting these places. My neighbors at my old place gave me hell about doing my lawn, but I always had the best-looking lawn on my street. Everyone else used services and always had weed issues. I told them it was no different than having a woman sleep with everyone in town and expect her to be clean. Those mowers transfer the seeds and disease from every lawn they cross and spread it from lawn to lawn.

Strange we don't have a local nursery when we have an agricultural school here!

I know it's been 30-something years ago when they burned down, but I still miss Sunset Gardens in College Station. Great selection and very knowledgeable folks.

Unfortunately the big box retailers with their high volume garden centers have made it hard for the old school local nurseries to compete in many places.

Calloways just opened in Round Rock. I'm hopeful that Calloways/Cornelius puts a location in this area. That's their first non-DFW or Houston location.

We drove to Arbor Gate regularly. We do avoid the weekends because of the lack of on site parking.

Best within 100 miles is Arborgate in tomball. Maybe the best in Texas as you would probably agree.

For roses, the Antique Rose Emporium is my go-to. Also may be best in Texas,

Definitely the healthiest plants. But the new location on 45 isn't as good as the one on 79

Mixed results at Farm Patch (I get my Roses, Esperanzas, Celosia, Turks Cap and a few others there). They seem to be on more of a "plant of the week" program and will not have everything in your plan if you desire variety. Mandevella and Hibiscus (tropicals)at Home Depot, Petunias and other annuals at Lowes. I have not found many healthy specimens of anything at Producers. I have had good results at A&A in Montgomery off of 105 - things you cannot find in BCS that actually do good here. Picked up a few foxtail ferns, society garlic, and other blooming shrubs at Container Grown Nursery for less $$ than any nursery around. I've also stopped by some of the Houston Garden Center's in the past as well (I think I only bought shrubs). Moon Valley is pricey.

Basically its because the water here is basically lethal to plants.. OVER TIME...

so I've been told by the plant people here in town...

so it's either go native or buy plants that will last a few years but eventually die...

also.... farm patch rules.. GO to FP and ask for Anne in the garden center part.... she's the queen....

A lot of similar size and towns smaller than BCS have nice independent garden centers. Amazing a town of 250,000 doesn't have even one.

I have purchased a number of plants there when I go up hwy 79 and they surprisingly have a great assortment of plants.

They are almost the same distance from here as Arborgate is and Arborgate not only has an equal or better selection but you have a number of restaurants nearby.

Also there is a place in Caldwell on HWY 21 in town right on the side of the road. They have beautiful stuff. Bring cash.

Bloomers in Elgin is off the charts amazing, my favorite nursery within striking distance of BCS.

Bonus: one of the best taquerias I've eaten at in the state is an extended trailer just off 290 as you approach Elgin...Tapatio or something like that. Makes for a fun plant shopping/taco gorging road trip.

Well....when you see these trailers roll into neighborhoods and those mowers have been God knows where, they are carrying in ever weed and disease that was on the lawns before them. My old neighbor got hit by the worst weed know to man, dove weed about 4 years ago. It looks just like St. Augustine but is a nasty weed that was brought in from Florida via turf farms. All the new homes out in Bridgeland had that sod and it was devistating. Turf guy told me it comes from the mower decks and it made sense.

The turf portion is not the odd part.

Antique Rose Emporium in Independence was always really nice. Pretty cheap too for what you get.

It may just be house plants, but Pot Heads in downtown Bryan is getting great reviews
