It's not necessary. It is utterly stupid that someone thinks this is funny or entertaining.
People used to call in anonymous bomb threats back in the day. Not much different.

We've already had one of those at the HSC in the last year.
There are no consequences for this so they keep doing it. Not hard to figure out.
It's coming from overseas. For about 2 years now they've been targeting K-12 schools around the US. You can always tell when its happening because 5-15 schools in one or two states (generally next to each other) will get these "active shooter" calls within a 30 minute timeframe.
According to police reports from previous incidents, they usually call the police non-emergency number, the caller speaks in a heavy foreign accent, and often gives very specific details such as a specific number of dead and the room number, number of wounded, highly descriptive info on the weapons being used and of the suspect(s).
They appear to have switched to universities in the last 2 weeks starting with Clemson and OU. Now they're calling it into numerous universities at once, just like they did with K-12.
Since the calls are coming from overseas using an IP phone system to spoof everything, they can't trace it, but most likely it is either someone just trolling, or a foreign government sponsored action.

Big difference between swatting and a bomb threat. Get a cop keyed up with a possible shooter or other violent situation, there is more likely to be an unfortunate incident.Hornbeck said:

Bomb threats are irritating and inconvenient, but very little risk.
