Food hacks for dining out and bland fast food

Regardless of what the media feeds me, I'd say there is a solid 30-40% inflation on food. Call me stingy but the past year has made me get creative in our eating out as I try to augment the bland with either cheap or flavorful substitutes brought from home.

Yes, we can and do eat at home but I'm referring to the casual quick outings of my spouse and I.

One thing we do is bring an avocado and split it across our Egg McMuffin, Whataburger Taquito, or burger. Paying for the half/cocked spread at the POS is more than twice the price and isn't as fresh. Heck, I have once or twice brought in some fresh spinach to throw on my burger.

Another is to drop into HEB and grab a $12 sushi pack and a coke and eating it in the car. Much cheaper than dinning out.

We also try to avoid places with table servers. Sorry but given we are paying 30% more for food this year, I don't feel like paying another 20% tip just to wait until someone comes by and fills my drink. I don't mind getting it myself thanks.

Any other ideas out there for making dinning out tasty, interesting and cheap?

1. Stop by Costco and buy an Army size portion of SPAM

2. Go to Blue Baker and buy a loaf of gourmet bread

3. Eat in the parking lot or your driveway

4. Check up on your portfolio and real estate values via your iPhone

5. PROFIT

Brookshire Brothers on George Bush has a pretty incredible selection of many types of inexpensive, good, ready to eat (cafeteria style) food. The lunch specials are very good too. BBQ, burgers, pizza, burritos, salad, sushi, even smoothies. I regularly eat there for under $8 for a healthy, filling lunch.

Thanks. Haven't tried that yet. Also, if you can put health aside for a bit, I think Costco has a foot long beef frank hotdog and a medium sized soft drink for $1.50.

The answer is Sonic. Share a meal, bring your own beverages, eat in the car or at the outside tables. Go crazy.

Also:
Enjoy 1/2 Price SONIC Cheeseburgers every Tuesday after 5 p.m. when you order in the app or online when you're logged into your SONIC Rewards account. This deal will automatically apply when ordering!

Plus lots of stuff on their 2 for $5 menu.

An episode of Golden Girls taught me to go to a fancy restaurant, order the most expensive champagne, pour salt in my champagne glass, and then complain until the restaurant pays for my meal.

Depending on your own personal morals, you could also sneak into Embassy Suites for their free breakfast and then in the evening for the manager's reception.

In all seriousness and for something less unethical, appetizers are cheaper than entrees. Splitting an appetizer and entree or two appetizers could save you money but still give you the experiences of being out at dinner.

And all drinks are 1/2 price all day when using the Sonic app. Not a bad deal. They had $0.50 corn dogs the other day (yuck - but still a good price).

We've found the apps for FF save quite a bit (I guess in exchange for your personal data but I'm sure I've given up quite a bit more than the fact I'm eating a hamburger).

When I'm travelling I pretty much don't eat at fast food places anymore. I find the closest grocery store and buy from the hot counter or jsut deli meat and cheese and some tortillas...

You can still buy a "meal" from Taco Bell's dollar menu and get a free cup of tap water. Couple of bean burritos and a couple of beefers will be under 5 bucks and is relatively healthy, though not at all low fat. Woe be to your workmates later on in the day.....

Here's another one for you (a slight variation of a prior high-quality offering)

Circle K's have 2 hotdogs for $3. Is this in your price range? Here is a nice review.

The largest markup at a restaurant is on beverages..
Order water with lemon and freshen it up with this...

Instant lemonade.
I do this with the energy drink enhancers (since restaurants normally do not serve this beverage)

Go to Jason's, order a cup of soup and water. Take a napkin over to the salad bar and get some pickled beets and boiled eggs. Smorgasbord.

I needed a laugh. Glad I clicked this thead.

At many restaurants the portions are huge so for two persons you might consider one entre and then order an extra side. For example at Sodalaks, you can get two fried porch chops with the meal. Add a side or two of veggies and each person eats one pork chop. Chinese dish portions are often too large...order a couple of egg rolls or won ton soup and then split the main dish in half.

Another thing I do is at Mexican restaurants I often just order an appetizer or small bowl of tortilla soup for my meal. By the time I eat a basket or two of chips, I don't even need that let alone an additional large plate of food.

As stated above, always just get water at restaurants. I just avoid paying $5 to $7+ for two teas. I drink way too much caffeine drinks anyway. Cut out soft drinks. Not only they are not good for your health, but you sure don't need the calories and the cost of flavored water. I haven't had a soft drink in more than 10 years.

A few days a week, eat light at home for supper...breakfast? A bowl of cereal? Most of us eat way too much anyway.

Sam's Polish dog used to be pretty good.

Nowadays I don't even want to get close to the food counter at Sams. It looks like Hepatitis got a minimum wage job.

Costco always has a whole rotisserie chicken for $5.

Punch cards and the loyalty apps can cut costs by 5-20%.

Lots of places give bonus gift cards with a purchase.

Probably the easiest hack is to just drink water.

Cotton Patch has some good specials each day. Check out their website.

To fight the bland, as the OP mentioned - bring along salt/pepper, Tabasco and Slap Ya Mama.

Pretty sure most restaurants will have S&P. If they don't I'm not sure why you would eat there....

SHould I bring my own butter and bacon and rosemary and thyme?
