LOL! What a dumbass.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

That was right after he was quoted as saying, "Going onto their property and trespassing, and if not, stealing. I hope we can get to the bottom of it," Schaefer said Thursday. Not a great image to portray to voters.

He is also the President of the CSISD school board.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

His reply in the comments section of the KBTX page is even more interesting and shady...full disclosure I voted for this guy and wish I could change my vote...

During the past 24 hours, my opponent and his wife have been spreading rumors about me as Election Day nears. Our campaign has the momentum, and they are desperately trying to disrupt what will be a victory for us on Tuesday night.
I was contacted last weekend by a supporter asking me to remove an elevated campaign sign located in their neighborhood without permission. I did so on Tuesday evening following a run. I shared this information with CSPD this afternoon.
I did not steal a sign. From the photo, it is clear I removed the sign myself using my vehicle on a busy street in view of both traffic and neighboring homes.
Clearly, this was a setup by my opponent and his wife. It is too convenient for a sign to be placed at a rental house within the view of a hidden game camera.
I will not allow my reputation to be disparaged by my opponent and his wife as they have done to so many other good people in this community. Many people warned me about their tactics, but I will not allow the voters of Precinct 1 to be held hostage by dirty politics. This may be their way of retaining power, but I will not indulge their gutter politics any longer.
There are so many important issues facing the Brazos Valleyboth health dangers and an economic crisis. I'm running to address these issues for the voters of Precinct 1, and I will continue to focus on you and your wellbeing. I'm looking forward to starting a new era of politics in Brazos County with you on Tuesday evening.

Why didn't the supporter that contacted him remove the sign if it was put there without approval?

Why would someone contact him to remove his opponent's sign? Why would he remove his opponent's sign? The sign in the pic doesn't have his name on it but his opponent's name, no?

Am I missing something in his excuse?

This person certainly does not need to be on school board or holding office, his story sounds very skeptical

Something(s) doesn't (don't) add up in this story, there's some info missing or misappropriated. Would be better understood if all the names, accurate facts, and their part in the incident were out in the open.

Right now my options are 1) middle aged adult / school board president steals a campaign sign -or- 2) there was a huge miscommunication between a "supporter" and a candidate -or- 3) there was a setup.

Option 2 is understandable, but a glaring blunder. Options 1 and 3 are flat out troubling.

Or maybe there's an Option 4, that being I'm a simpleton who can't read and comprehend a news article. That's certainly a possibility.

It's option 1

The sign had been stolen/removed without permission several times so a game camera was set up. I don't think anyone would have anticipated this outcome.

For the old timers, night time sign stealing/damaging has been an expensive game played over the years. It's well known so to think that he would go at night and remove a sign to help someone is definitely a stretch. Especially when it's his opponents sign. This was an old game years ago!

BUT, what glares at me is that on Thursday the school board president stated to media that he hoped someone was caught and it shouldn't be happening then the next day admitted to doing it after police spoke to him with the pictures? And he demands an apology for being set up?

It's like someone handed him a shovel to dig a deeper hole!

This looks bad.

However, I look through the Eagle (at home and online) and see nothing. What am I missing? The KBTC story was early evening. The local paper had no idea? Seems like a decent size story.
This should leave a mark.
Will check back to see what his cheerleaders have to say.

Schafer claims he was contacted by a supporter to take down the sign, but "KBTX spoke with the property owner and the person living in the house on Friday. Both said that the Aldriches asked for permission to put the sign on their property."

So yes he trespassed and stole the sign.

Schaefer deserves this week's dumbest-person-in-town trophy. His explanation about how & why he came to possess his opponent's campaign sign is pretty lame and reminiscent of one offered by a judge who was busted for soliciting prostitution. Upon hearing the tape recording of the 'transaction,' the judge explained that he was conducting a social experiment in order to be better equipped to evaluate the veracity of defendants and witnesses who appeared in his court.

Whether Schaefer stole the signs outright or Aldrich set him up, I only have one thing to say on this:

Set up or not (and I don't think he was set up ), Schafer stole the sign. Then tried to extract apology from Aldrich? Really? What planet is he from. I don't want him making decisions on my behalf in the county. Plus something I learned a long time ago. Usually when you get caught doing something wrong (stealing), its not the first time you've done that. It's th first time you got caught!

Thing is Schaefer remains a candidate for office in spite of his unbecoming criminal conduct. We don't need anybody like that on the Commissioners Court! Therefore, Precinct 1 voters must go to their polling place this week, Tuesday, July 14, and vote to re-elect Steve Aldrich.

When I first heard about this, my first question was did he himself remove it. I asked this because it's near impossible to imagine him doing something so dumb. You might be able to convince me he had someone doing it for him, but not him rolling up and snatching a sign in his personal vehicle. We are talking about a very intelligent individual. To be clear, I don't know him personally but have been around him and know of him. I'm sure I'll get slammed for posting this, but it just doesn't make sense to me. Maybe he's gone off the deep end all of the sudden, but otherwise it is a hard sell.

Did you miss this part?

Friday, CSPD detectives confirmed to KBTX that Schaefer admitted to taking the sign. Police said if the municipal court accepts the case, they could issue a summons charging him with theft of property, a Class C misdemeanor, because the cost of the sign is $100 or less.

It was monumentally stupid just to steal the sign. At this point he's barely above the local race hoaxer by at least admitting he did it. But not to be outdone he takes it further. How stupid can you be to double down on it and demand an apology from your opponent for stealing his sign? This borders on absolute insanity in my opinion.

I know both Schaefer and Aldrich, not socially but through professional and charitable pursuits and have always liked and respected both. I have not followed the race as it is not my precinct. I am , though, pretty disappointed in sign stealing. It is illegal and juvenile. Schaefer has embarrassed himself and his family and he should step down from the race as well as the school board. Not modeling behavior anyone wants at those levels.

Race hoax is a lot worse than stealing signs. Wouldn't mind if all political signs were stolen as they are all annoying and unnecessary

I have enjoyed your posts on the politics boards TCHANEY, and am in the same camp as you. I have not researched this subject much at all, just making an observation. Seems Crazy. I did understand he removed the sign, I just have a hard time believing he did it without someone asking him to like he mentioned. Crazy world we seem to live in, so who knows.

Again, why would he go remove his competitor's sign?? If some asked him to, and he knew it wasn't his, leave it alone. He's not responsible for where his competition's sign is placed, and he shouldn't be removing it, period. If it's really an issue, let the city know or call the other campaign, plain and simple.

Theft is wrong.

Someone who thinks it is no big deal may decide that other things are also no big deal.

Not a big fan of Schaefer in the development business being in charge (with the other commissioners) of the roads, bridges, and maintenance of the county w/o divesting of personal interest. Especially if he has now acted in a less than honest manner.

Have to agree on the signs being annoying. That was a big plus (for me) of Elizabeth Cunha running for City Council. She doesn't do any of that: All business, all for the taxpayer, what's not to like about that?!

No developer or home builder should be on the school board either.

So Donald Trump can run our country but he couldn't be on CSISD school board? Interesting.
