Moving to the Area

I'm moving to the area for work-related reasons. I'm excited to get my family into a small community and become an active participant in said community. I'd really prefer to live west of BCS for work reasons, so I've been eyeing Caldwell, but considering Rockdale, Giddings, and maybe Brenham. What do those of you from the area think about the town and schools of Caldwell? Any other places I should consider?

Live somewhere in the Mumford school district if you are looking in that area.

Stay away from Rockdale unless you like dirty water. They city is working to fix the issue, but it'll take at least a couple years.

Look at internet and cell phone connectivity if that is important to you.
Also, look at what the schools offer.
One of the nice thing about smaller community school is kids don't have to specialize to shine.
They can sample and participate more broadly.

Mumford isn't really a community but rather a solid ISD with transfers from the surrounding area.

From your list I would go
Brenham
Caldwell
Giddings
Rockdale in that order

How is it not a community? It's literally listed as an unincorporated community. It's mostly farmers, but it is in fact a community. The school accepts transfers, but a limited number due to the amount of students in their community and their reluctance to go up in divisions

Umm it has like 12 houses in the entire area. Everything else is outside the area

That's literally how every farming community in Texas is

Ok but if you are looking at Brenham Caldwell etc they are nothing like Mumford. Where I worked for two years and loved it but as for living in that area I don't think it would be what they want.

If they are also looking at best schools, you would be hard pressed to find a better school district in the area from k-12. You can always get involved with your church or other organizations in BCS.

No question on that. Working for Mumford ISD you have a great small school. But they designed the school for academic minded families who wanted a small school feel and succeeded in that but I think it doesn't have a lot of small town community involvement feel that the OP is looking for

I am not saying anything bad about Mumford. Loved working there honestly. Loved the kids but not exactly what the OP is looking for I don't think but a great school system

Brenham is nice. 30+ years ago it could be very cliquish and unwelcoming if you didn't have a German or Czech surname. That might have changed.

You will forever be "not from around here, are ya?" in Caldwell

I really appreciate all of the conversations, y'all. We are, in fact, looking for something more along the lines of an actual town in the size range that I mentioned. Not just the great academics of a school like Mumford. I value the education, but I equally value the experience in the small town, lessons of extracurriculars/sports, etc. Me and my wife also hope to make friendships in whatever town we become a part of. Again, I thank you all for the help.

I live outside of Brenham - moved here 10 years ago from College Station. We really like it here.

Does it have to be West of BCS? We're in Anderson and it's got an amazing school district and is an actual town...

I love Anderson! We buy all our firearms and ammo from Circle Star.

I would agree that west of town will limit options. We live north of Bryan near Tabor and love it (our kids will transfer out of county for school - we are on the wait list for Mumford, and we will likely at least start in Normangee). We have a lot of friends in Franklin and Wheelock that love that area too.

Grimes County is a great place to live.

DO NOT move to Rockdale. Mumford is supposedly a great school to be in, but might have a wait list? You'll have to dig into that.

when we registered/ filled out transfer paperwork for the 20-21 school year for Mumford back in December, they said we would likely be on a wait list for a few years. They said the younger grades pretty much always have a wait list, while you are more likely to get in if you are trying to transfer in an older grade. My son will be starting Kinder in the fall. They said they will send out admissions information in June, but to expect to not get in. They said they would keep our info on file and check each year.

Normangee is open enrollment, and its pretty much the same distance for us as Mumford (we live a mile off of OSR). It kind of sucks, because we literally live 1 mile from being able to go to Franklin, but they wont accept transfers at all. Im a stay at home mom, so I will be able to drive him to a bus stop either way (we have already confirmed with Normangee that he should be able to ride the bus, though it is pending superintendent approval. I would just have to drive him to the edge of their busing zone which is about 10 miles from our house). I honestly wish Franklin would accept transfers, because that would be the easiest for us.

We are zoned Bryan for Navarro, Davila, and Rudder. I know Navarro has come a long way in recent years, but we would prefer to have a smaller school experience for our kids (I went to a 6-man school, and really like the attention one can get in a really good small school.)

Brenham would be my pick.

A friend of ours is a MD in Brenham, but drives in from CS. She said that some people that have lived there for 40 years are still considered outsiders. This mainly occurs in the 'higher circles' at certain social events. If you are not interested in social climbing, you probably won't notice and won't care.

Many people may not want to admit it, but much of small town Texas still operates this way.
