I'm looking for peoples thoughts on this topic. If your water flows naturally away from your foundation, do we really need gutters in our area? I'll hang up and listen.

I hate gutters unless you have an actual need. Nothing like spending money to create a future maintenance problem.

I prefer them if they are installed properly.

Depends on how well your lawn is landscaped to move water away from your home. Know that 1" of rain on 1000 square feet of surface area is 600 gallons of water--you can adapt that to figure out the amount your roof sheds in a rain. If your landscaping has handled moving the large levels of rainwater we've dealt with the past 2 months, you're probably good without them.

None of that has anything to do with me preferring them if they are installed properly.

You only really need them above flower beds so it doesn't beat them to hell.

Other than that you don't need them unless your house sits in a hole and you have water standing everytime it rains.

Yes they provide a valuable service in helping keep your perimeter foundation beams more stable. Also they prevent runoff from eroding a drip line around the perimeter which will cause water to pool over time from erosion.

Last house didn't have them except for the entry sidewalk and front porch and the rest of the ground had exactly what you describe. I like being able to control the run off water.

Gutters installed on our new house 21 years ago.
Not a single maintenance cost for them since that time.

Yes gutters can be a great asset to your home and lawn.

Thanks for the thoughts! I think I'm settling on partial gutters. Thanks everyone!

If you're anti gutter I would suggest river rock (large, 2" +) not the small stuff, at major runoff points and wash out areas.
For the record though, we have gutters. I like the mulch staying put!

I used Seamless when I built my house. 14 years later, no issues.

There are two main places in town, both with confusingly similar names. Seamless Home Products is one and a lot of people like them. Brazos Valley Seamless is another and is the one I used since the owner is also a local firefighter.
