Local pest control company writing fake reviews online

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Several weeks ago a guy from Kindred Pest Control came to my house trying to get me to sign up for their service. The guy was incredibly pushy. To the point where I began to feel uncomfortable. I looked them up online, saw they had a lot of bad reviews and I left it at that.

Out of curiosity I looked them up again this week and noticed several positive reviews on Google and Facebook. I did some more digging, and I realize almost all of these positive reviews are coming from people that are Facebook friends with the owner or his family. Most of the reviewers don't even live in BCS. The ones that do live here share the same last name as the owner.

Is this common practice? Pretty frustrating that they're doing this.

I posted this on my Nextdoor but it didn't gain much traction since they're done with our neighborhood I guess. Posting here because this community seems to be a bit more active.

I always assume that a least half of the good and also bad reviews on restaurants and other businesses online are fake or at best extreme exaggerations.

Thanks for the link! Seems to be consistent with other things I read about that.

And that's a good point about a lot of online reviews probably being fake. I guess these reviews seemed to stick out a lot more to me.

There's actually quite a bit of talk about businesses popping up to drown out bad reviews with good ones. For a fee, of course. Yelp has become almost garbage because of this practice, though I have heard recently that Yelp is now trying to screen reviews and make sure they are legit. I'm to the point where I feel like social media reviews aren't worth the paper they aren't printed on.
