I don't wanna start a Laynes vs Canes thread FYI.
But we went to Canes tonight and my husband and I split a box combo and asked for a cup for water. They charged us $0.23 for it. I understand if we didn't order a meal, but that's ridiculous

I asked the girl "y'all charge for water now?" She goes "I don't really know."

Some places charge for water if you get their branded cup. The other day when I asked for a water the clerk told me that she can give me a plain cup and there was no charge and if I wanted the branded cup there is a charge.

I didn't have an issue with it and just took the plain cup.

Many fast food places charge for the cost of the cup. Many don't. Some have smaller cheap plastic cups for water.

People forget that employees cost a business between 12 and 24 cents a minute plus the price of the cup, ice, water, filter for the water, electricity, ect. I honestly don't think they are trying to screw you. Just trying to stay in business.

Did you bring your own cup? If not, do you expect handouts or free items everywhere you go? The fact others do or don't do it is a backwards justification.

I can remember back in the 1980s when a water cup at McDonalds was 10 cents. Don't know how much it is now. I agree that you are probably paying for the cup. The owner still has to buy the cup whether it is a brand or crappy plastic one.

I'm a big water drinker and I can tell you that most places do charge something for water. The following are ones I am familiar with and these prices are with or without food.

Dairy Queen - Charges the same price for water as they do soft drinks. So a large water is $2.49ish give or take.

Chicken Express [University Drive] - .50 cents

Taco Bell - Same as Dairy Queen, but they do have a smallish plain cup and will give water for free if you want that.

Chik-Fil-A [Culpepper] - Free

McDonalds - .98 cents usually

Sonic - .98 cents

I personally don't mind paying a reasonable price for water, but Dairy Queen ticks me off with wanting me to pay the same price as soda or tea. I greatly appreciate Chik-Fil-A offering free water. I think it is a little nicety they can easily provide loyal customers. I have all but completely given up sugary drinks and my medications cause dry mouth beyond anything I have ever experienced! I'm not being cheap. I'm trying to make healthy changes and need my water!

I don't think I have ever had a sit down restaurant charge me for water.

I've never been to a restaurant and been charged so I wasn't expecting it especially when I was there recently. It wasn't a troll, but a true frustration. I understand places charge, it's odd that it's all fast food.

I didn't think you were trolling. I was just offering a little insight and also thought you might appreciate the free water at Chik-Fil-A [Cullpepper Plaza]. I'm not sure if or what the other locations charge.

Newk's also charges the same price for water or soda I believe it is $2 something.

Perhaps one could argue that Cane's is practicing transparency--whatever the source of their water it is not free to them nor is the cup nor the labor.
Somewhere along the line, the other businesses are placing that cost into their pricing otherwise they are BCS 'coming and gone.'

I liken it to the communications bills that have the fees and taxes broken down where you see them seperate from the service (such as cable). I may still get frustrated with the bill, but I can also notice what specifically increased or even if an unauthorized third party tried to induce charges. Or ultimately I can cut the cord and do without.

Based on my days as a convenience store clerk in the distant past, the branded cups are the ones counted for inventory; if one of those is used, it is assumed that the cup was sold for the full cost of a fountain drink when the accountants sum up profits. The cheap cups aren't counted against inventory.

Once I was with a group of engineers at <big name chef's restaurant> in Las Vegas. Most of us asked for water, and when asked for whether we wanted still water or sparkling water, we said still. We should have said "Tap". The waiter brought out bottle after bottle of water, and we drank them to the last drop and kept ordering more. When we got the check, each bottle was some ridiculous amount like $10. We complained but paid, and haven't returned to that chain or any of <big name chef's> other restaurants since.

a little off topic, but we recently returned from a trip in Napa Valley, and places there were charging for sacks to take home what you purchased, as well as to go boxes at restaurants. we are very spoiled here

I eat at Newks a lot and have never ever been charged for water. Not sure where this poster got the $2 from.

Actually, the health code doesn't allow you to bring your own cup and have the restaurant fill it up. Or at least that was the rule when I worked in the local food industry.

Got it from my daughter last week...maybe they forgot to tell her about the different glass...or maybe she wanted a to go cup. Either way, she paid the same price as a soda as it was on the ticket.

Most places in that area charge for sacks, to-go dishes, etc. City ordinance. Hell, in San Francisco I was even charged for ice. I hate San Francisco, but that is only one of the many reasons why.

Absolutely, unequivocally false!
I order water all the time. They hand me a small cup, and I get as much ice and water out of the self serve machine as I want -- for free.
Same at Veritas, except they serve it to me with a smile, and their glasses are nicer.

Sounds like it is not unequivocally false. A large water could be $2.49 and a small water is free.

I would order soft drinks/tea more often at restaurants if they would have reasonable prices for them... but almost every restaurant now charges about $2.50 per drink... that's $10 for a family of 4.

I understand that's a huge profit margin item for them, but it's getting ridiculous.

NOT absolutely, unequivocally false! Please NOTE that I said LARGE water, not some dinky small cup. They DO IN FACT charge the same for a large ice water as they do for any other LARGE drink. Learn to read before responding.
