A friend of mine is graduating on Friday with her M.A., has been steeped in Hawaiian culture, and would be beyond thrilled to be presented with a graduation lei for the ceremony. The problem is that most florists in B/CS have no freaking idea what I'm talking about, the traditional flowers used (plumeria and orchid) are not plentiful in these parts, and getting one delivered from HI is impossible in time for the ceremony. Does anyone here have any ideas, e.g. a florist near Aggieland that might be able to help out? I've been calling around, but no joy. Since this is TexAgs, and y'all "know stuff," I figured it was worth a shot to ask. Below is a reference image.

If they can get the flowers, I'd be willing to bet Mr. McKinley and/or some of his students at The Benz School of Floral Design, at TAMU might be up for the challenge. No Guarantee's but worth a shot.

Just messaged an Hawaiian friend in Houston if she knows of anyone there who does these. Will advise per response.

Trisha Barksdale Designs is my favorite florist in town. Not sure if she can do this but perhaps can point you in the right direction.

Fay orders hers from Hawaii. I forwarded the email with who she uses to you. She thinks Saturday night be doable with overnight. Good luck... and Trish mentioned above is a professional.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but my wife is a Honolulu native and I order flowers for her from the Islands several times a year. There is no overnight to Texas from Hawaii - they can get it to the West Coast overnight - well by the end of the next day anyway. Florists in Hawaii ship Mon-Wed for two day delivery Wed-Fri, and for an extra price they will ship Thursday for Saturday delivery BUT their cutoff time is pretty early in the day Texas time.

Further, they are nearly wiped out right now because graduation is one of their busiest times of the year. Not only do they have tons of graduations in Hawaii, but they ship Leis to the mainland. My brother-in-law is a Hawaiian musician and rather connected, and he struggled to get a lei sent to a good friend because all his usual sources were sold out. This was last week so maybe things have changed.

But unfortunately, I don't think you have time to get one from Hawaii by Saturday night at this point. Hopefully someone can make one for you in Houston etc.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions. On short notice it is looking like carnations, in maroon and white, are going to be what we will use. Got lucky to snag the last maroon bunch that the florist had.

That's an even more awesome idea than a traditional Lei IMO!! Great thinking!

What a coincidence. I am looking for bluebonnets in Hilo. Mad because the florist look at me like I'm crazy.
