Friend in Houston debating to bring seafood restaurant into town, not exactly sit-down but more takeout/grab and go. Menu would be seafood platters/sandwiches, burgers, po-boys, etc.

What do you think? I know there are great sit-downs like Shipwreck in Bryan, but do you think CS/Bryan has an empty spot for this approach?

Shipwreck is a bar, not a "seafood restaurant." Until the opening of Boneheads, your friend's idea might have had a greater chance of success (not saying it doesn't BTW). But it sounds like it will be in that niche of Boneheads, Fish Daddy's and the soon to be arriving Pappadeaux so the competition will be pretty stiff.
That said, I wish your friend luck and success and hope he tries it out!

I'd love a place like that in town. Similar to Shrimp 'n' Stuff in Galveston would be awesome. It'd be more of a lunch thing for me though and where I am it's not real convenient to get to where most of the restaraunts are so location is really the deciding factor for me. For dinner we'll drive anywhere in BCS though.

I think there is potential... but location will be key for grab and go. South CS seems to be adding options and the market is ripe for new grab and go food. (Think soccer/sports/cheer/dance parents)

edit - that menu looks a lot like shrimp and stuff and a few other places that we love to visit in other cities on occasion - but they are REALLY good. With that type of menu, they would have to have great quality and value

This looks a lot like the menu that College Station Seafood had. I liked it personally. The people that ran it were from Baytown (I think but it has been so long ago so I can't be certain that is what she told me)

Are we talking along the lines of Captain D's?

I could go for something like Captain D's. Haven't been to one in years.

There seems to be some debate about the classification of Shipwreck—preettyy sure it's not a bar lol. It's a seafood grill restaurant (with traditional tables and chairs) that serves drinks and offers live music. Fair enough? :P

I personally think Boneheads, Fish Daddy and Pappadeaux would not be in the same niche as this venture—think smaller, not as corporate and simpler in execution (both in the facility and menu). And I would agree with some of you about something around here with a menu that resembles Shrimp 'n' Stuff/Captain D's.

Would love to have a fried shrimp or fried catfish place here. No pre-battered stuff though. They have to batter it at the restaurant just before cooking it -- big difference.

There's a new place going up in Northgate with retail on the ground floor. I understand their in need.of a restaurant

I love the idea! Put in a drive-thru. I won't mind a wait.

menu looks good, but seems rather large for a takeout/grab and go place. wonder about the quality. also, if it's a seafood place why have a ham sandwich, grilled cheese, egg rolls, etc... on the menu. seems to me places should pare down their menus and concentrate on the quality of food they serve. thats what gets me in the door. i have never eaten at this place, but, would give it a try, and if it is good, i will go back.

It sounds like a good option for the Tower Point area.

Went back and read the title of the OP's query again. Fried seafood? Yes, it will do well here. Fried things, along with bacon wrapped things, and things smothered in melted cheese and ranch dressing are the mainstays of the typical BCS diner. So yes, this concept should work extremely well here.

I don't think I would visit a fried seafood restaurant unless it really stood out from the crowd. Best fried fish we ever had was overseas in the fish and chip mecca of the U.K./Ireland. Granted, there were some establishments there that weren't so great, but when it was hot and fresh and good---mmm....

I am still looking for a Fantastic Philly sandwich, a good bratwurst, and an empanada or Cornish pastry. (the fried pie place prior to its demise was getting close, but a baked pasty is pretty good and filling....)

1. A restaurant with a drive through with a menu like that, so people who can't cook can just pick something up like that in their SUVs on the way home, would make money hand over fist here. (ZOMG, the idea of picking my kid up after soccer or some other healthy activity: "Guess what, Princess? We're getting deep-fried catfish on the way home!" Just hysterical. But I'm sure it happens here thousands of times a day.)

it would work....anything works in this town as long as you pick the right location and have the food for the right price.

CS doesn't have the type of people that Galveston does which would keep some CSers away.
