After opening new branches in Houston and Dallas, Grub Burger Bar is opening a third branch in Atlanta this spring.

Which made me wonder, what other businesses, restaurants or otherwise, began in BCS and spread to other (a) cities in Texas and/or (b) other states?

I always heard Double Dave's & Freebird's started in BCS. Never researched it, though.

Freebirds started in CA. I do believe Double Dave's is local, but are they outside BCS?

Its my understanding that Freebirds started in California and flopped. The founders decided to move to a college town and try again. How/why they chose College Station is a mystery.

I remember a year or two ago reading that Freebirds was returning to California after a 20+ year hiatus and was very well received.

I think there was a thread on the outdoor board (one of the deadliest catch ones) where it was stated some Aggies had gone up there to make money. After making some bank, they purchased a freebirds franchise and opened it in college station.

FWIW, Freebirds in CS bought out the franchise from California and the California location became a franchisee.

Last year I was in my hometown of Fresno, Ca for the first time in several years and was shocked to see a Freebirds a couple miles from my parents house. My mom told me it had been there for a few months.

Blue Baker opened an Austin location a while back.

There are quite a few Double Dave's across the state. Tyler and Lubbock are the first that come to mind.

Dickies.

C.N. Williamson and E.E. "Colonel" Dickie began their business careers in the "vehicle and harness" business in Bryan, Texas. In 1918, they made what turned out to be a momentous decision when they and a few friends established the U.S. Overall Company. Then, in 1922, C. Don Williamson joined with his father and cousin to buy 100% of the overall company on a one-third-each basis and renamed it Williamson-Dickie Manufacturing Company.

Emmett Dickie was my Great Grand Uncle. True that he and his cousin had a vehicle/carriage company in Bryan but both families moved to Ft Worth. Uncle Emmett was traveling salesman before founding Williwamson-Dickies Manufacturing Company there. But would love to know where their company in Bryan was located!

Brake Check started in San Antonio in 1968.

quote:
In 1968, John Peveto, Jr., moved to San Antonio from Dallas, where he had made a successful career at Kip's Big Boy Restaurants, to take an ownership stake in a struggling automotive chain called Brake-O. In only a matter of a few short years, he turned it around to become a thriving brake repair chain in the San Antonio and central Texas markets

Freebird's was started by two guys from UC-Santa Barbara. They visited Texas planning to open one in Austin, but decided on Northgate instead.

DoubleDave's has spread over the state, I've eaten in Dallas, Lubbock (original burned, 2nd location was better), Austin, CS, and frequently at my friend's location in Waco.

DoubleDave's is outside of Texas. I was driving through Norman or Moore a few years ago and there was one up there.

I'm not sure this is true . . . the first one, in Isla Vista (near UC-Santa Barbara) is still going strong. Saw the guy who played Peter on the Brady Bunch in there once.

On Freebirds, pretty sure the story is the that the concept was pioneered in CA, but the owner sought out a college town to perfect the concept. Decided on CS, moved here, made a killing and sold it all some time back.

As for the CA location(s), those may have come after the success of the stores here in TX. Not sure the original was kept open after he moved here.

Would you say Freebirds started in Cal. and failed, then restarted here and succeeded?

I'm pretty sure the history was that Freebirds started in CA, they decided on College Station for their second location. After they got that up and running (and maybe opened some of the other CS stores), there was a split between the original partners, and Partner A kept the chain and the Texas stores, and partner B went home and ran the California store.

Partner A then largely expanded the chain across Texas before selling it to Tavistock circa 06 or so.

From wiki

quote:
Freebirds World Burrito, Freebirds for short, is a regional chain of fast casual burrito restaurants founded in 1987 in Isla Vista, California by Mark Orfalea. The restaurant chain expanded into Texas in 1990 under Orfalea's leadership. In 1994 Mark's college friend and manager of the Texas location, Pierre Dube, purchased control of the restaurant and gradually expanded the chain to span 19 restaurants in Texas. Orfalea retained ownership of the original California location and a license to continue using the name in California. The Texas Freebirds World Burrito chain, which was headquartered in College Station,[1][2] was purchased by private-equity Tavistock Group in 2007. The chain, headquartered in the Tavistock Restaurants offices in Emeryville, California,[2][3][4] has grown to over 30 locations in Texas and a single location in Oklahoma and Kansas, with some Freebirds set to open outside the state in 2011.

ChipFTAC01 - You got it. Pierre expanded locally, went statewide, and sold it. Smart guy with a plan for success that worked.
