I'm looking for recommendations. Looking for short-term & long-term advice & care, not just a pill shop for Ritalin Adderal. If needed, will travel to Houston, but would prefer to stay in B/CS.

It looks like Dr. Nolte is a psychologist, not a psychiatrist. Thanks for the input though.

Ah, my mistake. Another practitioner recommended her for ADHD treatment but I incorrectly assumed she was an MD.

There are very few options in this town and those that are here are usually full.

Dr. Dave in Bryan
Dr. Lorene Henry in CS

and as for S&W docs....I am not familiar with them, they are bound to have a few. But again, there are few and they are busy!

PS: You can get a diagnosis of ADHD from a psychologist and take it to a GP or internist for the RX and then see the pysch doc regularly for the counseling part and med maintenance. Though psychologists do not have rx privileges in Texas, they are usually very knowledgeable. If they work with your regular doc to avoid mixing up drugs or side effect probs, you can have a very successful maintenance plan.

Dr Nolte's a lady. At least when I went to her a couple years ago. She was a therapist.

alisoncan, thanks for the info, I'll start checking those two out.

I'm in treatment with a psychologist. My meds are prescribed by my internist. They work together nicely.

Keep us posted on how things go. My former son-in-law is textbook adult Attention Deficit Disorder and isn't getting treatment. It's one of those things he's going to get around to one of these days.

After reading a bit, and considering the suggestions so far, I've decided to try Dr. Mahesh Dave. From his website I found out that he has been practicing Psychiatry since 1980, and longevity/experience is something I'm looking for as well. My thought is that I'll navigate through the psychiatrists in the area that my insurance will cover, and if I'm not satisfied, then I'll progress to a psychologist+GP.

I've also learned about the concept of a DO (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) vs MD (Doctor of Medicine). I think until I understand the differences better I'd like to stay away from DOs.

I'll post back here my experiences, and thanks again for the input.

I've been a patient of Dr. Dave since 2001 and highly recommend him. Good luck with your treatment.

So as with most ADHD individuals procrastination set in, and it took me a while to get over to Dr. Dave's office. So far I'm very comfortable with Dr. Dave, although on my initial visit he was a bit testy when I was asking questions. May have just been a bad day for him, as my other visits have been pleasant.

I've got a follow-up question for everyone here:

With all the medications on the market for ADHD, have any of you had success with any one in particular? Also, if I missed any below, please chime in.

Methylphenidate (Ritalin, Quillivant, Methylin, Metadate, Daytrana, Concerta)

Methamphetamine Hydrochloride (Desoxyn)

Lisdexamfetamine Dimesylate (Vyvanse)

Dextroamphetamine Sulfate (Dextrostat, Dextroamphetamine, Dexedrine, Dexedrine)

Dexmethylphenidate Hydrochloride (Focalin)

Amphetamine, Mixed Salts (Adderall)

Guanfacine Hydrochloride (Intuniv)

Atomoxetime (Strattera)

Also, I'm curious if anyone here has tried the option of Neurofeedback therapy treatments, or have even heard of them...

I have a coworker who takes Vyvanse and has said it's been awesome to help him stay focused with his ADHD.

+1 for Vyvanse, although my experience with is as a parent of an ADHD pre-teen.

Our experience with Intuniv was horrendous. Talk about a PMS-ridden boy. Like, whoa. YMMV, though. Plus, it's a non-stimulant; so it might be worth a shot before trying a controlled substance.

I use Straterra. It's expensive on BCBS, but I like that it is not a controlled substance.

adderrall and vyvanse made me extremely depressed after a year or two. You tend to have extreme focus on the mostly negative things aspects of life. It also completely changed my personality from extrovert to introvert. It had the same a effect on my 12 year old. It helped me focus, but it also almost cost me my marriage. I had a friend that experiences similar issues minus the depression. After many years on the drug I decided to stop the medication. The depression stopped almost immediately. We only allow the 12 year to take it on school days due to the negative impact it has on her. She becomes irritable, angry and withdrawn. Normally she is a happy go lucky type of kid. I normally don't post but wanted to convey that these medications ( I tried both) almost ruined my life.

Daughter takes Intuniv and it's been a great medicine for her. Makes her sleepy (she takes a nap 2-3 times a week) but the desired result is worth the trade off.
