If I get a personalized license plate stolen, do I still go to Bryan tax office to report it? I'm taking a trip soon and I don't want to get a ticket for missing the front plate.

Out of curiosity, what does it say?

LOST OR STOLEN LICENSE PLATES
As soon as license plates are lost, stolen or illegible they must be replaced. In order to replace your plates you must:
Visit your local county tax office.
Fill in an application for replacement plates. Please see the list below for links to the appropriate forms for each type of plate.
Pay the license plate replacement fees of $ 5.30 and in counties with a population of 50,000 the fee is $ 6.30.

All the above, plus a police report. The plates themselves can be entered into NCIC as stolen.

Aggie Phil is right. We recently had a case where a guy was driving a stolen F150. Every two or three days, he'd steal a front plate from another F150 with the idea that no-one would report the stolen plate and his truck would never come up as stolen.

How did he get caught?

Brilliant!

If I had to guess the guy was wrong and the plates were reported as stolen.

Heh. Makes sense.

Unless he stole a F150 plate of the exact same year model and color it's not as brilliant as you think...

Been there, done that, paid the fine. The officer has no proof that you "just" had your plate stolen. Story didn't work with him and didn't work with the JP.

Both said you should have reported it.

Did get a slight break from the JP (fine reduced) but I realize I should have replaced it earlier. My bad, and I paid.

You are living on borrowed time. Good luck to you.

Bad guys are usually bad guys. I think they busted him for something else. I don't know. Several of our vehicles have license plate recognition devices, so they may have been listed as stolen.

TLIAC - awesome to see you here. Gonna be in CS next week for TAMIO - maybe we can get a meal?

I went to tax office and paid $7 for new plates; don't have specialty plates now, but will get them again soon. Just wanted to be legal with 2 license plates since will be traveling this weekend. TLIAC see you at meeting in the morning.

It's the most numerous vehicle in the state. It's not hard to find one that's the same year and color in about 1 minute of driving around.

Doesn't matter if the truck matches the plate or not in this situation. If that plate number is entered in the system as stolen - it will show as a stolen plate if the officer runs it.

Elsie - maybe, depends on the day - I'm in training Monday-Thursday and out of pocket. Text me.

Observer, when did you receive your missing plate ticket?

The reason I ask is that I have heard that the new Texas driving laws left out any mention of a fine for missing plates.

I know two people who prefer to not have front plates that have both received multiple warnings this year in this area and around Houston. I was with one of the guys last month and a state trooper gave him a warning.

Maybe one of the law-folks can opine as to whether or not a missing front plate remains a fine-able offense?

Yep, still a class C misdemeanor.

Edited because of my post below with more info.

AggiePhil: I thought as you did, but do you have specific knowledge as to whether or not the missing front plate is (a) still a Class C Misdemeanor, and (b) still fineable?

Edited to add the Huffington article version...

Alright, I stopped being so lazy and googled... here is what I found easily, but I am not confirming the veracity of the article...

Also, it looks more like they left off that this is still a Class C Misdemeanor, let alone there is no fine.
