We will be moving to College Station within six months to a year. We want to be in the new College Station High school attendance zone. We need a 4-5 bedroom house with a price range of up to 500k. What is the best place to live given the above parameters?

The wife told me she wanted the kids to go to the new high school, or she wouldn't move.

Indian Lakes is pretty sweet but high HOA cost. I live in the new Castlegate addition. We like it. The lots will accommodate a large house if you want to have one built. Some spec homes are already there. Duckhaven is another neighborhood that should fit your needs.

Please provide me with some talking points to convince her otherwise. I have no preference as long as I live in CS.

Cant you send your kid to any school provided you pay a fee if you dont live in that zoned area? Given that youre willing to spend ~$500k on a house I would think you could afford to send them to the school of your choosing.

Indian Lakes, Duck Haven, Saddle Creek, Tuscany Trace should fall in your price parameters nicely.

Ok mwesson - in what areas will the new school be behind? I look forward to your response.

When you start from scratch, you get to hire all new teachers. In some cases that is fine but not all the great teachers will want to leave their current situation for an unknown situation. The physical plant is nice and new but if the advanced or special courses are not offered, then a new facility won't help you much. The past school re-zoning was focused on creating similar socio-economic diversity between the schools. I am not saying that it is good or bad---just that it is.

The anchor, I am interested in what you are proposing. What is the amount of the fee?

A good realtor will know school zones, neighborhoods, opportunities, etc.

Eight years ago I ran Laurie Brown ragged for 3+ months. She gave good advice, services, results. We still call upon her for real estate advice.

Do you want to be in city limits or out of city limits?
Do you want small, medium, or large sized lot?
What other things catch your attention?
What HOA range do you prefer?
Do you want to have some neighborhood amenities or not?
How old is your child(ren)?

While we understand the part of the new high school, if you give us what ideas you and your wife have for your preferred living lifestyle, I'm sure we can all help you out.

We are fine with inside or outside city limits. I will have 1 fish at a&m, 1 fish in high school, 1 eighth grader and a toddler (oops). A larger lot is preferable. In the subdivisions I have seen Bentwood or Tuscany Trace seemed like nice places. I have seen Indian lakes and while the homes are nice I would prefer a little less brush. I like Pebble Creek, but understand that it will not be In the CSHS zone. We don't want to pay more than 600/yr in HOA fees. I do not care what amenities the subdivision has. I don't golf and plan on building a pool at the house. I am really trying to make sure I am not missing something.

May not be many houses available but you might check Sweetwater subdivision. I don't know much about the subdivision (HOA, etc.), but I do recall when we were looking for houses not too long ago, we found a house in that neighborhood that we really liked, but it was out of our price range (though it would be in yours).

Its a small subdivision off of Greens Prairie Road, past Castlegate.

Here's the attendance zone map for the high schools (you probably already have this, but you never know):

Im not proposing anything. I dont have kids in school so I may be wrong. But, I thought you semd them to a different public school than where youre zoned provided you pay a fee. Maybe im wrong.

You can't pay a fee, Bryan lets you go wherever you can take them.

OP Tuscany and Brentwood are nice but far out and the trains are loud and I think on propane. Just FYI

Check out Woodlake.

We bought in Estates of Creek Meadows off of Green Prairie Trails, and we really like the neighborhood a lot. Good luck in your search!

I'm the school resource officer at the new high school and I have been nothing but impressed with the administration, staff and faculty. They are strict but very caring and the kids are their number one priority. This year there are just 9th and 10th grades and the new programs are just getting started. I think that you would be very impressed with the school if you had a chance to visit. The posts (obviously negative) by a poster above were gone by the time I saw this thread so I don't know what he/she said but if my kiddos were high school age I would be excited that they would be attending CSHS.

He merely said in a nutshell that both High Schools are equally good. You can't go wrong anywhere in CS.

Thanks to everyone that replied. I completely forgot about the train. Good point.
Barry Potter 09
How long do you want to ignore this user?
When it comes to the train, it depends on different things. Of course, noise coming from the tracks is a big thing, but I live fairly close to the tracks, and I do not hear it as much as I possibly could. As long as you get a well built home for the noise, you should be fine wherever you are.

One other big thing is getting caught by the train when trying to cross it onto and off of Wellborn Road. There are not that many ways to turn, so you will just have to wait most of the time.

As for how the new high school is, my younger brother goes there and he has nothing but positive things to say about it. As for the staff, I personally know many of them and they are really good at what they do. In addition, the school provides some other things that Consol does not offer, such as the culinary classes, which is by far my brother's favorite class. I'm not bashing the Consol teachers, but the CSHS teachers are really working their tails off. I talked with one of the teachers, who was once my teacher at Consol. She told me that in all of her years of teaching, this is her busiest one yet. She is enjoying it, but she is definitely earning her paychecks.

The best thing to do for you is to roam around the south side of town to get ideas of each community. I've done that myself, and there are many positive things about the area.

Best wishes on your search and making your wife a happy wife.

Friends with AggieRxDealer, and like he and his Wife, moved to Saddle Creek a year ago, which is in the CSHS zone, and couldn't be happier.

Wife is a Real Estate Agent, and she'd be happy to help you out, or I can give you some insight, or at least my opinion.

What's your email, or feel free to hit me up...email in profile.

Best of luck!

Thanks AggiePain for that response. So TLIAC and those of you that read this thread don't wonder...

My posts essentially said that I didn't think I would limit my house search on the basis of school zones as both zone's high schools are great. They each will have their own strengths and weaknesses.

I deleted them so that this thread would not be taken down a path it didn't need to go and was not in line with the OP's original request.

Thanks for the clarification - that's what I get for assuming. And yes I know what assuming means. It's just that normally positive stuff isn't deleted.

If you have six months, maybe consider a custom build. The guys at Blackstone Custom Homes in CS are great to work with. Google their website. Matt Johnson is the owner.

Have you looked at Nantucket, especially since you are looking to buy a house that is already built? There are several nice houses here, and it is zoned for CSHS.

Don't think that CSISD attendance zones are set in stone (or even written in ink). Once a school starts struggling, the need to "balance the schools socioeconomically" will cause attendance zones to be reshuffled so that problem student groups from the struggling school dispersed throughout the district. Thus, no schools are struggling but few acheive either (i.e. consistent exemplary status, national blue ribbon awards, etc.). The problem has been diluted not corrected.

If you want top notch schools in BCS area, look at Mumford, Iola and Anderson-Shiro or the private schools if you have to live in the city limits.

Schools do balance with socioeconomically. But in CSISD it is like the difference between driving a BMW or Mercedes-Benz. Anyway you go, your in the Best ISD around this area.

23 districts selected High Performance Schools Consortium members

AUSTIN – Texas Commissioner of Education Michael L. Williams today invited 23 school districts to participate in the Texas High Performance Schools Consortium, which will help develop innovative, next-generation learning standards, assessments and accountability systems. TEA will host the first consortium meeting next month.

“The school districts selected to participate in the consortium are already known for their innovative work and are looked to by many as educational leaders. This exciting project will help the Governor, legislative leaders and the Texas Education Agency craft a sound, well-thought out plan to move all Texas schools to the next performance level,” Williams said.

Following is an alphabetic list of those selected to participate in the consortium.
