It seems that a lot of residents of Hearne are upset because the Hearne Police Department shot and killed someone who was allegedly shooting a gun at the most crime ridden apartment complex within miles around. The decedent's family says that he didn't own a gun because he was mentally challenged.

Horrible article in The Eagle, completely one sided! Hope the officers are fairing well and can move on.

Unfortunately, this is what happens when the department doesn't release much information after an incident. The only side that IS talking (and talking a lot) is the suspect's family.

I met the deceased last year and he was not "mentally challenged" then.

"Hearne police Officer Stephen Stem on Wednesday was placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation into a fatal shooting three days earlier.

Few details surrounding the death of Tederalle Satchell, who has a Bryan address listed in court records, have been released since the 2:30 a.m. Sunday incident unfolded at the Columbus Village Apartment complex in the 800 block of South Riley Street in Hearne.

According to a statement released by Hearne police, dispatchers received reports of a “large group of people” in the parking lot and on their way there received information that shots had been fired from a white vehicle that had three people inside.

Soon after, authorities said, officers arrived at the complex where they located a car carrying three men who fit the descriptions given to dispatchers.

It’s unclear exactly who fired the first shot or what prompted the officer's actions, but the release states that “Stem was involved in a shooting resulting the death of one subject.”

Investigators said a gun not belonging to the officer was recovered from the scene.

Williams said it was protocol for officers to be placed on paid leave during an investigation involving the use of deadly force.

He declined to answer questions relating to details that were not included in the seven-sentence press release.

If I remember correctly, he attended Franklin ISD for some time and at that time was considered mentally challenged and attended special education classes. His nickname, if this is the same person, was Budda (pronounced Budha).

Which honestly I think is neither here nor there, if he in fact had a gun and the officer felt his and other lives were in danger then he acted appropriately. Nonetheless, a life lost is always sad for the family involved, whether that person be acting innocently or criminally.

Hearne is a great town. I hope this onetime event does not give us a black eye.

Dr. R. L. Johnson, a civil rights activist with the Royal Society Civil Rights in Austin, is launching his own investigation into the case because he says he believes this is an issue of race.

"Yes by all means this is racial, by all means it's racial," said Dr. Johnson. I will make it my business, my personal business, to make sure that justice is served."

The Hearne Police Department was already under investigation before Sunday's shooting for another officer-involved shooting back in July so Dr. Johnson says he will do everything in his power to bring charges against whoever is at fault.

"It is very important that justice must take it's place for the family, for the victims, for this community and for the people as a whole here in this city," Dr. Johnson said.

We reached out to the Hearne Police Department for comment but they declined to give us any more information, pending the results of the investigation.

The Texas Rangers are assisting.

Of course he knows. Hearne P.D is not talking so they must be hiding something. I'm sure Dr. Johnson will get to the bottom of this cover up.

According to Dr. Johnson's biography, he has a doctorate in "Motivational Speaking and Bibliography of Philosophy"(school not mentioned) and has done some work in a funeral home as an autopsy tech. trying to find the causes of death.
