Does anybody know if my son can take his test in a car with temporary plates and no plate in the front?

Don't know for sure, but it's my understanding that a car has to have front and back plates to be legal. I would imagine this would pose a problem when trying to take a driving test.

Is there anyone in the family that can lend a vehicle for a few hours?

Temporary plate is legal for a specific number of days. The expiry date is written on the temp plate.

Try a rental car.

I think when you have temp plates, you only have to have one on the rear. Front plate not necessary. Call the DPS, they could tell you for sure.

So if I would have had to retake the test when I moved here, a brand new car from Alabama wouldn't be fit? We only have the one plate on the rear.

They will make you reschedule if you only have one plate. Don't know about a temporary plate.

You have to have a plate in the front. I had warning twice just cuz of that.

We were able to use the car because it was dealer plates. You must have car with current inspection and plates. If you are borrowing a car from a state that doesn't require front plates that is fine but if you own the car and are getting a Texas DL then car must have Texas plates. You can not call the Bryan DPS office. I finally called San Antonio main number and after the run around got my question answered. DPS iis very difficult to deal with especially the Bryan office!

I think there is an exemption in the law that if yor car did not come with a front bracket then you don't have to display a front license plate.

The Texas Transportation Code states that you have to have two license plates on your car (http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/Docs/TN/htm/TN.504.htm)

quote:
Sec. 504.943. OPERATION OF VEHICLE WITHOUT LICENSE PLATE. (a) Except as provided by Subsection (b), a person commits an offense if the person operates on a public highway, during a registration period, a motor vehicle that does not display two license plates that:
(1) have been assigned by the department for the period; and
(2) comply with department rules regarding the placement of license plates.
(b) A person commits an offense if the person operates on a public highway during a registration period a road tractor, motorcycle, trailer, or semitrailer that does not display a license plate that:
(1) has been assigned by the department for the period; and
(2) complies with department rules regarding the placement of license plates.

However, there was a rewrite of the code last year that accidentally removed the punishment portion of this section (source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/16/texas-license-plate-law-missing-sentence_n_1098274.html) and they won't be able to fix it until next year (unless Perry calls a special session to fix it). While technically it's not spelled out, there's still a chance you could get ticketed for not having a front plate.

(ETA: subsection b so nobody's confused by the quoted code)
