I heard way back, that when the landfill closed on Rock Prairie, there were plans to turn it into a park. Does anyone know what the plans for that area are??

don't really think that is possible. The garbage gives off methane gas, so there is some kind of a methane barrier or cap installed on top of it. They collect the gas (and sell it ?)

But for various reasons I don't think it can be developed, and almost any kind of digging or structure would puncture the methane cap.

They cap and turn old landfills into public use areas all the time when they're done. Yes they collect the gas and use it. Not sure if there are any plans for this particular landfill or not, but turning them into park areas is not new.

Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View CA is also built on an old landfill. Last I heard the Rock Prairie site was still destined to become a park. BVSWMA remains responsible for methane monitoring and other compliance issues.

That is the plan that I recall as well Sarah.

It is a very long term project though and with the current cut in funding to parks I would imagine its many years out on the priority / bond lists.

If the gas built up for decades it might be concentrated enough to provide some sort of "explosion" but more than likely itd neve be an issue.

When did the landfill close?

On Aug. 30, the Bryan City Council approved the ratification of a Landfill Gas Purchase Agreement with the Brazos Valley Solid Waste Management Agency (BVSWMA) and the City of College Station.

Under this new agreement, methane gas collected from the Rock Prairie Landfill will be sold to Bryan Texas Utilities (BTU) and College Station Utilities (CSU). It will also serve as fuel for a future electric generating facility currently in the planning stages.

Blue Baker & Rosa's over on University are all built on a sort-of landfill. More of a dump covered in spoil dirt.

Which the excavators building that center kept discovering to some dismay.

Don't remember my source, but I heard that it wa going to cost more for the methane wells to be put in and run, than they were going to produce.
