Does anyone know what signs are of snake bite or poisoning of a dog?

How long do you want to ignore this user?
My husband called me at work a bit ago to tell me our dog was dead. He went out to feed her this morning and she was dead. He said that something yellow was coming from her mouth. She was just fine last night. My son was out playing with her and when we fed and changed her water she was just fine, her usual rambunctious playful self, so whatever happened, happened overnight. My husband and son are heart broke and they are keeping the girls inside (6 and 3 years old)so they can't see until they get arrangements to dispose of the body (Large body, Alaskan husky)My husband made some calls and has been told by a few that it sounds as if she may have been poisoned (the yellow coming from her mouth) and someone else told him to check for snake bite. If someone poisoned her, I would just like to know why?? Why our dog? She was a good, lovable, kind and sweet dog, she loved and played with everyone and she was penned, not out running around hurting anyone or bothering anyone. My girls are going to be devastated when they find out she's gone

I'd call the TAMU small animal clinic. I'm sorry for your loss!

I'm very sorry to hear about your dog.

1) the most common snakebites in B/CS are from copperheads, which are probably the least poisonous of native venomous snakes in Texas. If your dog was snake bitten, you would probably find a large swollen area at the bite site. Edit: I had a German Shepherd that was bitten twice by a copperhead, both times he was uncomfortable for a few days but was completely fine.

2) Yellow stuff from the mouth could be bile, but also a myriad of other things.

If you really want to know the cause of death, take the body to your vet or the A&M small animal hospital so a necropsy (animal autopsy) can be preformed.

I'd call the TAMU Small Animal Clinic. Not knowing would be too much for me.

I'm not an expert, but from what I've heard, there is just lots of swelling with snakebites, and dogs with any size to them, say more than 40 pounds, should be able to survive most snakebites.

You may wish to check to see if any of your neighbors put out poison baits for rodents, or sprayed their yard with pesticides/herbicides. It really sounds like poison to me.
I have not heard of snake bites being a problem in our area. In Arizona, where I spend a fair amount of time, dogs getting bit by rattlers is horribly common.
Very sorry for you and your family.

Concentrations would not be high enough, even with human error, to cause acute poisoning.

There is nothing worse than losing a pet.

Last week, our puppy (BIG BEAGLE PUPPY) came home and literally just stood over his waterbowl, dazed & confused. Very strange behavior for him. We started looking and saw a blood spot near his mouth and the area began immediately swelling. I called our vet & was told that it was definitely a snake. I was told to give him one baby Benedryl and two aspirin twice a day for the next three days. He was definitely uncomfortable for those few days but the swelling went down a TON in the first hour. This week, he is back to his normal little CRAZY self.

Again, I am sorry for your loss!

Slug bait will kill a dog.
It has a sweet taste they like.
Poisoned rodent would also be a problem.

I am so sorry.

Thanks everyone. My husband has called a few places and he is going to take her to one of them. No she didn't bark a lot at all. She was a good calm quiet dog. She didn't even bark at strangers unless she felt they were a threat. We live close to the train tracks and every dog in the neighborhood howls and barks when the trains come thru and she didn't even join them with the trains. We have never had any problems with her barking at night or anytime really. She was just a very loving and playful dog.

Also, my husband and son checked her out thoroughly and there are no signs of any kind of bites or injuries on her body.

I am so sorry. I had a chihuahua that passed away a few years ago. She was fine when we went to bed and then we found her under our bed in the morning.

I didn't look and had to have my husband clean it up. When she died she was laying on her side and had yellow "stuff" coming out of her mouth. I know she wasn't poisoned or bit by a snake.

Is it possible that the yellow stuff is stomach bile working it's way out of the body? Sometimes when my dogs puke the bile is yellow. It could have just been her time to go. (not that that makes it any easier)

I've seen a lot of warnings about certain kinds of dog treats that are causing dogs to get really sick and die. If you had given him some treats you may want to check this out.

stinkerbelle I am so sorry for your family's loss. My two mini-dachshunds were bitten by a baby copperhead last year. It bit one and then the other one. Their mouths immediately were twice their size within seconds! I took them to the vet and they were put on meds and fluids. They were never in danger of dying from what I learned.

Again, I am so sorry. As a teacher, I would recommend the book, THE TENTH BEST THING ABOUT BARNEY, about a pet dog's death written for children.

Could be this. Years ago we lost a dog that had eaten a mouse that had ingested some rat poison. We took the dog to the vet because it seemed to be limping and the vet called later to tell us it died. Autopsy showed it ate the poisoned mouse.

How old was the dog?

stinkerbelle
How long do you want to ignore this user?
She was just over 2 years old. She choked on a mouse. It was caught in her throat and she couldn't get it up or down. The yellow was stomach bile, which contributed to her death also, she couldn't get her throat cleared and when the vomit came up it also had nowhere to go.
My girls are so upset, all they know is that she isn't with us anymore, but my husband is devastated, he loved his dog.
Thank you all for your kind words and sympathy, it is greatly appreciated from myself and my family.

Wow, how odd. At least you know that she wasn't poisoned and there really wasn't anything that you could have done to prevent it.

Sure doesn't make it any easier.

NO she did NOT bark a lot. I already said that. We didn't have any problems with her with barking at all. Actually there are dogs all around us that bark and howl all night long and she never even joined in with them. Barking was not an issue with her. We have found out the cause of her death. Although losing her is painful to the family, at least we know what happened and that she wasn't poisoned...but if she had been, it would NOT have been because she barked too much!

So sorry for your loss. I've had a dog pass away suddenly (from an undiagnosed seizure disorder) it's tough losing a dog from an illness, but I feel as if it's worse when it's out of the blue. One minute they're fine, and the next they're not. Makes you really think about how life is precious...

Sorry, going off on a tangent. For your kids, there is a great story that I am a fan of, even as an adult.

Any way she could have gotten into car antifreeze? Dogs will lap it up, some are yellow liquid.

Not all snake bites will swell - my vet had to shave my dog looking for the bite site - found it on the back leg. Without treatment I am pretty sure she would have died - took vitamin K and a blood transfusion to save her. She was very sick. We never saw the snake.
