....and then I go to HEB and cannot purchase a bottle of wine for another few hours.

The ignorance in our society and the willingness of most citizens to lose their freedoms sometimes amazes me.

You do realize that it's a state law that liquor stores are closed on Sundays, and grocery stores can't sell beer and wine until noon, right?

It's one of the stupidest laws (federal, state, or local) of which I'm aware. The fundamentalists running the government, and restricting the freedoms of regular people to buy a perfectly legal product, and restricting the freedoms of a business to sell a perfectly legal product.

The fundamentalists almost never lose in Texas.

Prior planning prevents p*** poor performance.

j/k - this is why my wife goes to the grocery store at 11:30am on Sundays...by the time she hits the checkout line...

I didn't say it wasn't stupid... Just pointed out that it's a law. The original post made it sound like he is complaining about the business not selling to him. I'm just saying it's the NOT fault of the business.

Edit: to add NOT... makes more sense now...

How is it the fault of the business?

Obviously it's a law as if it wasn't why would a store not sell me a product?

No, it's the fault of ignorant citizens that allow laws that restrict their freedoms to continue.

oops - NOT the fault of the business. Left out a critical word.

So start a petition for a repeal? It's a law that's been on the books for decades.

This is why I used to love living in Las Vegas. Booze at any hour, any day.

Plan ahead. It's not that hard.

Do you also try to go to the doctor on Saturday and the bank on Sunday and complain when they are closed?

Dry and blue laws are dumb. When I first moved here I had to drive (probably broke the speed limit) from Madisonville to Singleton (the location of the closest liquor store) because I didn't know the Madison was a dry county. Nor did I know that one couldn't buy hard liquor in a grocery store. But you can buy box wine and beer to your hearts content?
I was bad and argued with the clerk about it. "You have mixers, but closest liquor store is 30 miles away? Who does that?"

I'd like to see some of those old Texas blue laws brought back. More people would stay home with their families on Sunday.

One of the biggest culture shocks I've ever had was walking into a grocery store in Chicago and seeing hard liquor on the shelves.

I can understand not allowing hard stuff to be sold in regular grocery stores. But the time thing is kind of dumb.

I really can't. What does it actually matter if I buy Jack (I remeber being able to get a big jug for 20 bucks) from Ralphs/Kroger or the liquor store?

Many of you miss the point of the thread. The point is is that the government should not restrict the freedom of people, and of people through the stores they elect to shop at, to conduct their lives in an orderly fashion if it doesn't harm anyone else.

What a novel idea!

Same thing in Louisiana. Walmart, Sam's, etc., all sell hard liquor.

That would work if the vast majority of people out there weren't morons.

Not to mention gas stations, shacks on the side of the road, etc. Heck, as soon as you get across the boarder you can pull through a drive-in liquor barn and get a full-strength hurricane in a to-go cup. Laissez les bons temps rouler!

Agreed!

Texas > Louisiana > Obama's Chicago

This goes without saying.

eta - one of the key differences is having HEB's in TX.

Uh, yeah, this dates back to the 21st Amendment, back in 1933, you do know this, yes?
