I haven't checked the forum for a while, so maybe I missed a thread about this. If not, I'm surprised no one has mentioned the upcoming Bryan Blues Fest which the CoB is contributing $30,000 to.

It is easy to see why the city is contributing money to this. After all, they have excess taxpayer money to spend and apparently didn't clear it out by spending enough of it on Texas Reds.

Not to worry though -- they're going to get it back through tax revenue from all the people attending it according to the above article. They only have to spend a bit over $300,000 to generate enough tax to cover it. No wait, my math is wrong. Of the 8.25% sales tax, the state gets 6.25%. The county and city split the remaining 2%. Bryan's take is 1.5%. I'm sure the attendees will definitely spend over $2,000,000 in this community, more than making up for the $30,000 the city is giving the organizers.

Looking forward to the Bryan Blues Fest. Should compliment Juneteenth celebrations very nicely, and fill the hole left when they moved Texas Reds to the fall.

I saw on the article, it said that standard to give to a festival is $8000, but they unanimously decided to give $30,000 instead. How on earth was that unanimous?

I thought Texas Reds was supposedly moved from that date because it was too hot to have a festival.

Will take place at the Palace Theater as opposed to all over downtown.

I thought it was moved partially because of the heat, but also because it conflicted with local Juneteenth celebrations.

Although... Juneteenth celebrations might be better paired with a blues festival. Seems like that might be a good way to bring people of all races together.

I was wondering what my property and sales taxes were supposed to be spent on. Alas, it's social engineering! Silly me thought it was for basic services like roads, public education and infrastructure.

The $30k is going to the African American Heritage & Cultural Society, so yes it will tie in nicely with Juneteenth celebrations.

The Navasota Bluesfest is held in August. The concert Saturday in Navasota is called "Blues Bluebonnets and BBQ."

It should still be a good time, Marcia Ball will be there. And it's free!

So, Navasota has 2 blues events during the year. Did Bryan need to pony up 30 grand to stick another one in between those events?

If I wanted to make a donation to the African American Heritage & Cultural Society I would do it myself. I don't need the city of Bryan guv'ment to do it for me.

That's terribly politically incorrect of you Turk. You'll need to come sit in the mybcs corner with me if you keep that kind of talk up.

Tensions in Bryan simmer over special event funding
By APRIL AVISON
Eagle Staff Writer
Members of the Fiestas Patrias event committee say they've been treated unfairly because a separate planned festival received a larger budget allocation from the Bryan City Council.
But Bryan officials say the Texas Reds Steak & Grape Festival, planned for June, is a city initiative that shouldn't be compared to Fiestas Patrias.
Tempers flared in a Sept. 12 council meeting when Councilman Mike Southerland questioned a budget allotment of $81,000 to the Texas Reds event. At a council meeting last week, seven Fiestas Patrias board members spoke before the council, arguing for "equitable" treatment.
Fiestas Patrias has been held in downtown Bryan for 14 years and draws close to 20,000 people, according to organizers. This year was the first time the festival received funding from the city. The council allotted $5,000 for Fiestas Patrias this year and waived more than $4,000 in security deposits and permit fees, according to city staff.
The Texas Reds festival is being billed as Bryan's "signature event," but some Fiestas Patrias supporters have said they think the Mexican independence festival already holds that title.
"Fiestas Patrias is the signature event of Bryan," Marco Portales told the council last week. "Almost everyone turns out from the community, and it's a nonprofit affair. Now you are considering a proposal to give $81,000 for the Texas Reds festival. As a taxpayer, personally, I don't think this is right or fair."
The council voted last week to approve the $81,000 budget allocation, despite protests from council members Southerland and Joe Marin.
Mayor Pro Tem Mark Conlee said Friday he doesn't understand how the connection was made between the two events.
"When the city of Bryan produces an event, they use Bryan money. When Fiestas Patrias wants to produce an event, they should use Fiestas Patrias money," Conlee said. "We didn't give them any money for [13] years, and we never heard anything about it. Now we give them money, and instead of being thanked for helping, we've been attacked."

Wonder what will happen after other groups get wind of the $30,000 donation?

I guess one conclusion that can be drawn is that Juneteenth paid off better than Mexican Independence.

They probably figure that blues music has a much broader appeal than Hispanic music.

Also the money is coming out of hotel taxes and not general Bryan tax money. People who live in Bryan are not paying for this shindig.

It's interesting to wonder how the city figures which organization they are just gonna throw 30 grand at, considering how many different choices are available.

sales tax isn't how you get the 30k back. it is the money spent in bryan that goes to the owners/workers who originally paid the tax

Didn't you hear people will be coming to Bryan from Canada? CANADA! Paul Madison said so. I mean when you think Blues....who doesn't think of Canada? And they can't go home every night after the Festival.......so it is "heads in beds" the very definition of use for the Hotel-Motel Tax. Kudos to COB for bringing our neighbors to the North who know what Blues is all about. Enjoy our Summer here in downtown.

Rule #7 of The Blues:

Blues can take place in New York City but not in Hawaii or any place in Canada. Hard times in Minneapolis or Seattle is probably just clinical depression. Chicago, St. Louis, and Kansas City are still the best places to have the Blues. You cannot have the blues in any place that don't get rain.

Maybe they meant Canadian, TX.
