Speed Limit on University Drive

I'm just throwing this out there as an FYI ...

The speed limit is different on each side of University Drive through all of the restaurant areas (roughly from Tarrow to almost the bypass).

It's 50 mph heading toward the bypass (east) and it's 45 mph heading toward campus (west). I'm pretty sure it wasn't always like this, but I got a ticket the other day for going 52 mph at the intersection of Tarrow and University. When I was pulled over and told I was going 52 mph I said, "OK, well, I was in a 50" and was informed that no, I was in a 45. I think there used to be a 50 mph sign in front of where Panera is going in, but it is now gone (perhaps due to construction?) and there are motorcycle cops at the intersection in front of the old Albertson's just waiting to tag unsuspecting folks coming toward campus who still think it's 50 (as it is on the other side).

I reallly have no idea how long the discrepancy in speed on each side of the street has been going on - I probably go west on University once a month and east on University ten times a month and since it's a route I'm familiar with, I don't look for speed limits to change. I know, my bad. Anyway, just trying to look out for my fellow drivers who may not know that the speed limit on University apparently depends on which way you're going and the cops are looking to get you for thinking otherwise!

I think it's been 45 for awhile now.

Like I said, no idea, but I've lived here forever and it's always been 50, like it was on the other side, to the best of my knowledge. And since they have dual motorcycle cops tagging people in front of the old Albertson's, I thought it might be something new and they were taking advantage of the fact that people were relying (like me) more on memory than on looking at every single sign they passed, especially since it's still 50 on the other side, which makes absolutely no sense to me. I'd like to know when it changed, but the cop wasn't exactly Mr. Public Relations when I asked a few questions...

Thanks for the info - more than I got out of the cop, that's for sure! Still seems odd to me that speed limits on the opposite side of the same street are different, but ... guess I've just been lucky up until now!

There is a 45mph sign around chef chao's eastbound. and yeah, it's been there awhile.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
But heading east, there is then a 50 mph sign right before you get to Tarrow (around Harley's), right? So it's 50 going east and 45 going west ... just doesn't make any sense.

Unless I'm crazy and just remembering "the old days" - I do have a tendency to drive on autopilot at times since I have two toddlers in the car, and I rely on my memory for speed limits around here most of the time!

meezer,

It used to be 40 mph on the west side of Hwy 6. It became 50 mph when it was widened to its existing width.

Don't think I've ever been on the west side of Highway 6 on University (I'm being serious...) - I just mean from the Bypass to Tarrowish .... don't know anything about over the bypass, though. I started driving in this town in 1985 and that stretch from Tarrow toward the bypass was 50 forever, and remember when there was no light at the Red Lobster intersection? Just stop signs and you had to try to get across all those lanes of traffic going 50! Glad that's gone!

I agree with you, meezermom. I believe the posted limits are different, depending on which direction you're going. I have looked for a lower limit sign on the "towards Highway 6 side," but I haven't found it yet.

FWIW, and I know this won't be a popular opinion on this board, I think 50 and even 45 is too fast now that all the development has occurred.

Years ago, when I lived in the Cedar Creek apartments, there wasn't much on that stretch of road at all--the Chimney Hill complex, the Hilton, Cedar Creek, Creekside, and the strip of offices on the right before Scott & White. Back then, the speed limit was 50.

Now, there are so many more businesses, places to turn, etc., that it seems a lower speed limit would be safer. Just my humble opinion!

I can't help but think that you're probably right about the lower speed limit possibility and with even more construction, it will probably happen sooner than later. Even though that posted speed limit is apparently 45 going toward campus, I was in with a pack of other drivers who obviously weren't doing it either so I wonder how many people even pay attention to the signs or how many drive on "memory" like I was doing and had no idea I was speeding!

That area is one of our high crash areas - expect to see motor units in that area for a while. Also, we are working on a project that will put our top five (I think) traffic areas out there for everyone to see where our motor guys will be "hiding."

Right now you can catch the locations on my radio spots but this project will give you another way to find out where we are.

University is 45 both ways from the bypass to Nimitz. The change eastbound from 40 to 45 is right by the shopping center that had the TCBY in it. Westbound it is at the feeder intersection from 50 to 45. Not to sound like an ace but next time you drive through there look for all the signs and you will see them.

Small thread hi-jack here---
Another area where drivers need to be alert is along the Wellborn Road-FM 2818 section. Heading North, the speed limit drops from 55 mph to 45 mph just prior to the overpass. The cars that rocket past me as I slow down need to be very wary as I've seen two rather nasty collisions at the intersections there. (and also several elaborate and not well-executed U-turns by some confused drivers)

Hmmm. So am I crazy? I know there was a sign in front of (near) Harley's that said 50 mph as you're heading toward the bypass. Which would mean it's 50 until you hit the signs near Starbucks et. al. telling you to slow down. When did that sign go away?

Unfortunately (and I'm NOT using this as an excuse for my apparent speed limit ignorance on University, it's just the way life works) I spend a lot of my time driving being a little too busy to look for every single sign along the side of the road - there are just too many things going on with a 3-lane roadway, idiots texting and on the phone, speeding cars cutting off doing 2-second lane changes, etc. I tend to keep my eyes more on the roadway and other drivers than on signage, unless I'm in an area where I've never driven before, which is why I've pretty much memorised the speeds around here.

And as TLIAC said, definitely a dangerous road, which is why I'm always watching the other drivers and just go with the flow of traffic, which is how I ended up getting in trouble ($250 worth of trouble, to boot!)...

AFAIK, nowhere on University between Texas and Hwy 6 is there a posted speed limit of greater than 45mph - going either way.

Been that way for at least two or three years.

Previously, it was 50mph.

lol at "every single sign." only ones you need to pay attention to are speed limit signs!

And it is NOT a dangerous road.

There are no dangerous roads, just dangerous drivers.

I'm sad nobody has pointed out that 52 is still speeding in a 50.

Yes, of course this is a joke.

When I was younger, there was a county road that got a stop light on it, never really figured out why. I ran that light several times because I was just used to it not being there and it didn't make any real sense. Not proud of it, just think it is funny how we gets complacent on areas of road that we are familiar with.

Well, I remember it being posted 55 from the Bypass to Spring Loop/Lincoln
before dropping to 45,
then 40 near what is now Great Wall-Montolongo's; to be 35 from Texas to S. College,
and 30 there just past the McD's and not increase until Agronomy (40, then 45 by UPD, then 55 at 2818, IIRC).

I well remember East 60 being posted as 65 all the way to the creek where it dropped to 55--and no one but no one pulled out of Physicians' Center or Copperfield any faster than about 30mph, when they went that fast.
East University only slowed to the current posted limits when the light at Copperfield went in.

Was always too exciting rolling past "Restaurant Row" with people crawling along about 15-20 past that 55mph limit sign. So, the change is welcome in my book.

Probably worth noting that the lime from McD's to Agronomy is different now, too--it's a uniform 35, not 30 (not sure that's a net gain, though).

Another small thread hijack...

Maybe TLIAC can shed some light on when the speed limit will drop along University between Agronomy and College Avenue? With the restructuring of the Wellborn/University interchange, the addition of the Boyett signalized intersection and the added pedestrian refuges and wider sidewalks, the speed limit there shouldn't be any higher than 30 mph.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
"not a dangerous road" doesn't seem to be how the resident police presence on the board described University a few responses up - hence, I would beg to differ with you.

And yes, LOL, 52 in a 50 is still speeding. My car is only 15 years old, so my speedometer must not be properly calibrated with CSPD's!

^^That would be a Mr. Traffic/TxDot?? question. We don't "make" the speeds we just enforce them.

And I would consider the area of University Drive between Tarrow and Highway 6 to be one of our more dangerous areas traffic wise, especially since it has been designated a high crash area.

Right, people don't kill other people and dangerous roads aren't a problem at all.

Side note/ Thread derailment...

I'm not sure on this but I don't remember ever seeing a 55 sign exiting Hwy 6 to Bus 6/Texas. As far as signage goes I swear it goes from 70 to 50 right under the Rock Prairie exit overpass.

From the College Station Code of Ordinances:
Business SH 6-R (Texas Avenue)
For traffic moving in a northerly direction, for the first 0.166 mile from the intersection of SH 6 (Earl Rudder Freeway South), the speed limit shall be fifty-five (55) miles per hour. For the next 0.795 mile, the speed limit shall be fifty (50) miles per hour.

Saw the MCs out in force on University today. Glad to see them at stoplights and such. Drove extra careful while recalling MM's recent ticket. Did not see any speedlimit signs, but then wasn't really looking for them. No idea what the true limit is over there so I kept the old crystal ball on about 40. Managed to escape notice from College Station's finest.
