After serving the solid waste disposal needs of the Brazos Valley since 1981, the Rock Prairie Road Landfill has reached final capacity and is no longer accepting municipal solid waste. The Twin Oaks Landfill is fully operational and replaces the Rock Prairie Road Landfill.

Closure activities at the Rock Prairie Road landfill will continue into 2012 with planned upgrades to the landfill gas collection system, the construction of a final cover system and the development of a landfill gas-to-energy facility.
Parkland is owned adjacent to the landfill and there should be a nice lake created near RP if IIRC. They need the dirt to cover the fill. Of course, with the drought - it might be quite a mess for a while...
There are certain elements that can be placed on top of a closed landfill, I attended a presentation on options a few years ago. You can't puncture the cap so there are significant improvement limits - but it will soon be the highest point in College Station!
Recently I was told that the land where Abuelos and the rest of that development was, at one time, an A&M landfill. First I heard of it, but due to this person's expertise, I have no reason to doubt the accuracy.
