We discovered my favorite recipe at a friend's house on the 4th 2 years ago. Basically mix a cheapish red wine with Welch's Passion Fruit juice and serve over frozen fruit. Not something I would have tried on my own but way too yummy. I'm not sure that we girls remember a lot of that 4th of July celebration.

When it comes to wine, I am a bit of a snob. ha ha. I almost believed that myself, but for sangria...cheap works. We really like Arbor Mist Zinfindel sangria. Mix it with frozen fruit...inexpensive, but delicious.

Well, "plonk" has always been the starting point, traditionally.

A red Zinfandel or a crisp pinot noir or a shiraz in 1.5l for under $10 is a great start.

Only exception to that is in making a sangria blanco--you want a crisp and dry white, like a pino grigio or a chilean white--anything as sweet as a chardonnay will get too sweet.

Then, you need a 2-5l jug, and glass is slightly better for this, if possible.

Then hit up the citrus section of the store(s). You want 2-3 oranges; couple lemons; 4-5 limes. Halve and juice the citrus, and add to the wine.

If you want to be fussy, zest the fruit, other wise, put the halves in the mix.

For blanco, add in grapefruit; for red a tangerine or two.

Now, seal up the jug and let it sit a while in a cool dark place. Leave it alone to soak the oils out of the rinds.

Now, the fancy Spanish thing is to peel the oranges, stud them with cloves, and pour heated brandy over until the alcohol infuses with all the oil the orange zest owns--this then, into the wine.

Bit of brandy and a shot of clear soda water are both traditional.

Or, get a big jug of Yago Sangria, cut it 2:1 with store-brand sprite and 8:1 with well vodka, and serve over crushed ice.

Here is a white peach-raspberry sangria that I make. It is very good IMHO.

1 (750ml) bottle dry white wine
3/4 cup peach flavored vodka
6 tablespoons frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed
1/4 cup white sugar
1 pound white peaches, pitted and sliced
3/4 cup seedless red grapes, halved
3/4 cup seedless green grapes, halved
3/4 cup raspberries

In a large pitcher, combine dry white wine, peach vodka, lemonade concentrate and sugar. Stir until sugar is dissolved. Add sliced peaches, red and green grapes.

Refrigerate sangria until well chilled, at least 2 hours, or overnight to blend flavors. Serve over ice, and use a slotted spoon to include sliced peaches and grapes with each serving

Traditional Sangria

1/2 cup brandy
1/4 cup lemon juice
1/3 cup frozen lemonade concentrate
1/3 cup orange juice
1 (750 milliliter) bottle dry red wine
1/2 cup triple sec
1 lemon, sliced into rounds
1 orange, sliced into rounds
1 lime, sliced into rounds
1/4 cup white sugar (optional)
8 maraschino cherries
2 cups carbonated water (optional)

In a large pitcher or bowl, mix together the brandy, lemon juice, lemonade concentrate, orange juice, red wine, triple sec, and sugar. Float slices of lemon, orange and lime, and maraschino cherries in the mixture. Refrigerate overnight for best flavor. For a fizzy sangria, add club soda just before serving.

We sell a TON of Sangria at Shipwreck. What we have found is that most folks around her like it sweeter versus the dry traditional sangria.

My advice is to go with the "Traditional" recipe above however replace the soda with 7-up and float a shot of Grand Marnier (Orange Liqueur) on top when served. You can even leave out the brandy as it gives it a dryer taste.

Have a blast!

Though in no way is this a traditional Sangria it turned out to be a very refreshing summer drink (and snack).

I used Wimberly Valley Winery's Sweet Red. It's a very sweet wine, almost to the point of being grape juice with alcohol. it usually runs $5-7 a bottle.

I sliced a few lemons and limes as thinly as I could, then cut up larger slices of nectarines and oranges. Put them all in a large glass jar and poured the wine over. I let it sit in the fridge for two days, the nectarines were partially infused with the wine and it just had a hint of citrus. The fruit left over was really just as good if not better than the drink, I need to find some other uses for it, Hmm maybe a wine infused nectarine cobbler...

I liked it straight but my wife mixed hers with a bit of Sprite. Be careful though, this is one of those drinks that can sneak up on you.

Per Jerry Jeff

Start with some wine
Get some apples and brandy and sugar just fine
Old friends always show up on time
That's why you add Sparkling Burgandy wine
I love old Sangria wine
When I drink it with old friends of mine
Yeah I love to drink with old friends of mine
When we get drunk on that Sangria wine

CHORUS

In Texas on a Saturday night
Everclear is added to the wine sometimes
Some nachos, burritos and tacos
Who knows how it usually goes, it goes

CHORUS

Yeah I love that Sangria wine
Just like I love old friends of mine
They tell the truth when they're mixed with the wine
That's why I blend in the lemons and limes
And I love that Sangria wine
Love to drink it with old friends of mine
Yeah I love to drink with friends of mine
When we get drunk on that Sangria wine

I like to use a cheap, sweet, red table wine, cranberry juice, triple sec, and brandy. Let it soak in citrus fruits. If you want to make it white use a cheap, dry white and white grape juice. Serve on ice.

This is how I make it but be careful. 1/2 gallon cheap merlot, 3-4 oranges sliced and squeezed, 2 limes same, 1 lemon same, about 2/3rds a cup of sugar, about 6-8 oz rum of choice. Mix well. Taste it and get it where you want it. Keep in mind it is going to taste strong because it hasn't been watered down with any ice and the fruit juice hasnt settled in. Put it in the fridge over night. Serve over a tall glass of crushed ice like you would a mojito. Crank the music. Watch the clothes fly.
