Yes, seemingly every day we have a problem with internet access with Suddenlink. Ever since they "upgraded" the system, we have had significant problems. Yes, a tech has come out and he blamed an old splitter; besides that we have had the same digital splitter in use before and had no problems.

Basically, if our previous experience with satellite TV wasn't so bad, we would have dropped Suddenlink a very long time ago!

Ours goes out periodically. Usually, we just disconnect the router or modem for a minute and then replug. Usually works!

People with persistent problems really should contact Pete Able. pete.able@suddenlink.com. He's a VP with SL who will get things straightened out at the local level.

Ours was going out intermittently since around spring break, sometimes for hours. The ready light would blink like it wasn't connecting properly with the ISP. Resetting the modem usually didn't work. Suddenlink phone support claimed I had good strong signal throughout, and said it was probably due to my wifi router. I didn't believe him and our IT guys on campus agree that the router shouldn't make the modem lose it's connection. Plus, connecting directly to the modem didn't help.

Today I went to Suddenlink and bought a new cable modem to see if it was the modem. No problems so far but it's way too early to tell based on the previous outage frequency.

Hearing that others have been having problems is interesting.

Bio, what brand/model modem is your old one? You may be able to get a warranty replacement. Some of them have warranties for 5 years.

Dakota,

Its an ambit. I bought the old one from Suddenlink in 2008 and I took their word for it that the warranty was only 1 year.

I confess that I didn't look into whether a cable modem purchased elsewhere works on their system. Could I have just bought one from Amazon or eBay?

Bio - We were having some issues with an odd smell coming from one of our components and thought it was the modem. Suddenlink replaced it for free. They even sent a guy out to hook it up, not that we couldn't have done it, but they insisted. It was a surfboard modem, btw. We have had it since service was installed in 2005 and there was no charge for it at that time either... At least not that I recall. Either way, when I spoke to the customer service rep, she said they didn't charge to replace the modem.

A friend of mine had to have the modem replaced. She does the monthly rental with suddenlink. That fixed ALL her connectivity problems. The service tech said the old modem was still good, but with the upgrades they have done, it didn't work right with their system, so they replaced it.

Katt07, do you lease the modem from them? I went with the buy option, so I wouldn't expect free replacement. I didn't smell anything, but it did seem like it was getting rather hot.

RDH80, I hope that's what will happen with ours!

70% of cable internet problems can be traced to the modem.
25% can be traced to corroded splitters or wiring connectors.
5% can be traced to the neighborhood cable router.

======================

So you're saying Suddenlink in never down for regular maintenance or repair issues? Hard to believe that any service is 100% available. Anyone on Suddenlink knows that they were down a month or two ago for about three days.

Its been about a year since my internet was out.... no downtime for me in the past month or two. I have had 3 periods of downtime in the past 3 yrs I have been with suddenlink and it almost always runs at my quoted 10mbit speed.

I have the motorola surfboard sb501 modem and it has been very reliable for me. I have also removed all splitters between the cable coming into the house and cable modem.

the last 2 weeks, my netflix streaming constantly rebuffers between High Def and Standard Def. Seems like we can't keep a consistent stream.

Mind you people, I don't often defend suddenlink, but there are other components on your networks constantly sucking down the bandwidth.

Depending on who in the house is doing what, and how much bandwidth you pay for, your internet may have issues. Your iPhones and laptops and desktops update on their own and it will slow down the network if you are also watching Netflix or trying to download that latest Jonas Bros. album.

We have Suddenlink at the office. It goes down often. That being said, I cannot log onto the router's page until I reboot it when that happens, which means it is the router and not suddenlink that is depriving me of my internet. Beyond that, the modems are teh suck.

The internet connection coming up to our businesses and homes likely is more constant than we give Suddenlink credit for, but the hardware to get it to us is usually a little cheap. That's how you keep costs down.

Let me clarify my statement:
of the 70% of problems attributed to modems:
1/2 of the problem is no signal from the source.
1/2 the problem is in the modem.

always start with the modem. Its your link to the outside world.

Bio, sorry I couldn't find any info on Ambit. It looks like a pretty cheap/generic product. You can buy any cable modem that is compatible with their system. DOCSIS 2.0 or 3.0 I believe. Craiglist is a good source.

yes---my friend still had a 1.0 and the tech said those are not good with their upgrades.
