lately ive been hearing a distinct "knawing" or chewing sound in my bedroom and office. several times a day for a couple weeks. We've investigated and never spotted anything, outside or in the attic until today. i caught him in the act! a squirrel has been chewing on the side of our roof where the outside wall and roof meets. our breaker box and all electrical lines enter our house at this exact point. I am afraid this squirrel will do serious damage. How can I get rid of him? do you trap a squirrel? poison it? he isnt inside our home only outside and when we approach he jumps to a nearby tree and presumably laughs.
help, i want this tree rat gone!!

can we shoot a pellet gun in the city? thats probably a dumb question but i really dont know. and could a pellet gun do damage to my roof if i hit it?

If a pellet gun hit your roof it might make a tiny little hole in it. Shoot that fool.

coyote or fox urine will do the trick- available at Gander Mnt, Academy or Burdett & Son

If it's in a fairly protected area, spray something like bitter apple on the areas that you don't want chewed. Tastes awful and makes them salivate like crazy, but no long term damage. It's safe to use around pets and kids.

id LOVE to shoot him. Im a country girl and conseal carrier and i have great aim- I just dont want to break the law or damage my roof. also, I was thinking there might be an easier way I hadnt thought of. Hes QUICK and as soon as he hears the door open he runs.

Possibly. However, since he seems to be confining his chewing to one specific area, there could be something there that he's trying to get to. With two dogs in our backyard most of the time, we rarely have issues with squirrels. We did have some grackles that thought they wanted to learn to fly there, but when one of our girls caught on the birds, the wildlife seem to have gotten the message to stay out of the yard. Hope you come up with a good idea to get rid of him.

Can I borrow a trap? I have the same problem except, I have a demonic cat that is keeping me from sleeping. The thing has dug up my garden, taken dips in my kiddie pool, and enjoys running across my roof, my fence, and my window seals. Then, it fights with other animals at 3 am on my deck.

It will kill the squirrel and might knock a little paint off but no real damage to the house.

I just get angry if a pest tries to destroy something I am paying for.

I DO have a critter trap that I may have to use. Id rather not trap him but I will do whatever I have to to eliminate the problem. I also am very protective of what Ive paid for! thanks again!

I would NOT relocate this tree rat. I am the daughter of a veterinarian and all for the care and protection of animals but imo this is a pest. a damage-doing rodent. The only reason i see to trap it is because hes hard to catch in the act. if i catch him in a trap his days are over.... unless those who suggested relocation want him released in their yard....

You can relocate them to our place! We feed squirrels. We have 8 acres and Dachshunds that are in training for Wiener Fest 2011!

I highly recommend against any relocation. If you feel it needs to be trapped, it should be euthanized.

Txaggie, crack me up! I too amd a dachie owner and the squirrels can help the dogs get in shape and improve their speed!! They should put squirrel pictures at the destination side of weiner dog races...
