Stopped there again today on my trip to Austin. It's just a little place with a wrap around porch and a gravel parking lot, right off 21 as you're driving in to Bastrop. They serve burgers, steaks, shakes and such. They play country music.

It's a good place. Stop by sometime if you're headed out that way.

It's called The Roadhouse. Great place. Been there many times. The jalapeno cream cheese burger is awesome.

I've eaten there several times myself, and it is usually pretty good. It's a nice little spot to take a road/food break, too.

We drive through there quite a bit, often timing the drive to hit there early lunch time.

The hamburger with cream cheese and fresh, raw jalapenos was a favorite. Lately the meat has seemed a less generous and dry - as opposed to what used to be very plentiful and juicy. Maybe that is a "sign" I am supposed to switch to salads, which also look great.

Friendly staff and service.

Yup, my family makes sure we always stop there when we go through Bastrop. Very good burgers.

We stopped by a few weeks ago for the first time and really enjoyed it. Oddly enough, I got an avocado burger, and my avocado tasted a bit off. I mentioned it to the waitress, but she didn't do anything about it.

And yet, the burger was still very good once I scraped off the avocado.

So...what hole in the wall places around here am I missing out on? I'm thinking of places like Feed Barn, the original C&J's BBQ, the original Koppe Bridge....

What other little off-the-beaten-path burger/beer joints am I missing out on?

It's a favorite discussion topic around here. Personally, for hole in the wall places, I like Yankee's and Mbreuax's (spelling?) out toward Huntsville. Mallett Bros. BBQ in Navasota is pretty good. Folks here have some favorite Mexican places downtown they swear by.

Agreed. The Roadhouse in Bastrop is the place for burgers (all kinds of varieties, my favorite is the Avacado or Blue-Cheese). Yes, great shakes! My wife & I rate it as our favorite, though Harvey Washbangers comes in a close second (and is a little closer!).

It's not as good as Shipwreck Grill's "I'm on a boat!" It is kinda funny toward the end when all the trucks on 21 are drowning out the poor guy as he's talking.

I noticed that the Roadhouse had a lot of cars when I drove through Bastrop this evening. Didn't stop because I was still pretty full after stopping at the Luling City Market. Very, very good. Maybe some other time.
