Went in on opening day (4-17-11) with family of 4

Place is simply decorated but nice

Food was GREAT and prices seemed reasonable

Plenty of food, you won't leave hungry

Concentrated on Sushi but plenty of hot dishes, many I had never seen

They told us opening day is actually Thursday and encouraged a return visit

Highly reccomended

Had take out from there for dinner tonight. We will definitely be going back! I was impressed with the selection of foods that aren't on the other Japanese menus in town.

How does it rate compared to other sushi in town (quality/price/quantity)?

The price for lunch was great and I even received two salads while getting the Bento box (although, I believe that receiving two salads was a mistake).
The food was great, the staff was nice (the lady that is in charge was yelling/screaming at her workers in the back - which was a little awkward) and the price was spot on.

About same price as Naked Fish for the Bento box, but at Naked fish, you get 3 pot-stickers. Here, it seems you get another salad. Here, you also get to choose two items (like sashimi tuna and a roll), etc. There were 6 pieces of roll versus 4 at Naked Fish.

I'm looking forward to going again soon... very good... thumbs up.

Is an online take out menu available for viewing?

So is it safe to call this is a "quicker" sushi place like Kyoto and Naked Fish rather than upscale like 40 Tempura and Atami?

Food was amazing... did not think a local place would top 40 tempura... But they did. We had 4 rolls and soups.

The roll pictured below is a Texas roll. It was so good, I ordered another. It has mozzarella cheese and scallops on top.

Tried it today. This is by far the freshest sushi I have ever eaten in this town. The portions were perfect and the prices are more than fair. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. They are definitely up there with 40 Tempura, maybe even better. The restaurant was decorated nicely and had a calm, serene setting. I will definitely be going back for more.

The problem that I usually run into is that I would bankrupt myself if my wife would let me.

I can eat a substantial amount of sushi/sashimi

I love the stuff.

I have eaten at Naked, Haiku, Atami. I have enjoyed all of them. I find that Haiku has the largest portion for the price, but also think Naked is reasonable, just not as convenient of location for me.

I am excited to try Kamei. If ya'll don't mind me asking how much were the rolls you ordered ?

(or maybe they have a menu online and I can look for myself)

The rolls I ordered were 8 - 12 dollars. I am sure I will be back this week. May post a menu.

Cannot wait to try them out! Maybe for lunch one day this week.

It seemed to me that a large portion of the rolls either contained tempura items or had the tempura crunchies on top. I'm personally not a fan of tempura.

However, this the first place (only in town) that I was able to eat raw shrimp. Looked like a tiger shrimp. Very fresh and clean. No stomach issues the next day so guess it was good.

Overall I like the place. Good prices for sure.

Ha Charlie - I bet you will get very familiar with them since there aren't a lot of food choices there for you.....what you feel like Sushi or Waterburger.........Whataburger or Sushi ?

Just had lunch at Kamei and thought it was a great lunch deal.

A pick two bento box is $8.50... what I was really impressed with was that it came with four slice of sashimi, very fresh (one of my two choices).

Definitely going back.

Just ate there for my first time. Had salmon sushi, super white sushi, tobiko, and the College Station Roll. Very fresh. Semi-warm rice and cold fish = perfect!

I am afraid though that being so close to my home, this place will break the bank. Luckily we have about 20 bank locations at TowerPoint to compensate. Speaking of which, I think these little mobi banks are not much more than dressed up "check cashing" joints

Anywho, great job Kamei!

I am also worried that the fact I can WALK there will hurt my food budget. Oh well.

The sushi was very good and the lunch specials were very reasonable. I liked the fact that the rolls were sized/priced appropriately. I like variety and I hate it when a roll I'm interested in is $15 and so large that it's a meal in itself (40 Tempura, Haiku have this problem). I had 2 different rolls and they were about $8-9 each and just the right amount of food (for sushi that is).

However, they suffer from the same problem as 40 Tempura which is they only have one sushi chef so the service is slow. If the place is moderately busy, plan on being there a while.

Ate there for lunch yesterday, and will definitely be going back.

The prices were excellent--the lunch bento box and the lunch sushi combo (two rolls for $8.50 plus soup and a salad, or three rolls for $10.50 plus soup and a salad) were really good deals. The rolls on the lunch specials are the full size rolls--not just a few pieces or something!

The fish was super fresh--best I've had in town.

As CN said though, it was _really_ slow at lunch, which is a pain when you have to get back to work. I hope part of that is just growing pains and they will pick up the pace over time. I'm glad they didn't rush though--I'd rather they take the time to get things right, which they did.

CN I can help you finish if you are unable to finish the whole roll....

(Typically orders 3 rolls minimum, hoping they are 6-8 pieces each, disappointed if there are only 5 pieces, and has to order another roll)

25 pieces is just about right.

YUM.

The lady up front is the front of house manager (not an owner). Her name is Daying. Very nice and attentive. She's the type of person who tries hard to remember her customers. I'm glad we have a good japanese joint for us Southsiders!
