Brazos Valley Bucket List

Was thinking about this topic for friends coming in from out of town, or new folks moving in to the area.

- Go to an A&M home football game, preferably against t.u. Be sure and come early to see the opening ceremonies. Midnight Yell Practice is worth going to, also. If you're unfamiliar with A&M and its traditions, these will help.

- Go to Silver Taps.

- Go to Aggie Muster. Say "here" for someone who has passed on.

- Visit the George Bush Library. Have your picture taken in front of a section of the Berlin Wall and the "freedom horses" statue.

- Visit the Sanders Corps of Cadets Center. Be sure and see the Metzger-Sanders gun collection. Buy a brick while you're there.

- Tour Mesina Hof Winery.

- Spend some time in downtown Bryan, especially on a First Friday or during Texas Reds. Visit some shops, eat in some of the restaurants. Spend a night in the La Salle Hotel.

- Speaking of La Salle, go see his statue in Navasota. The French donated the statue to the city to honor the explorer, who died nearby.

- Go to Washington-on-the-Brazos and reflect how far Texas has come. Tour the Star of Texas museum.

- Visit the Fanthorp Inn in Anderson, and take a ride on the stagecoach.

- Go to the Renaissance Festival in Plantersville at least once. Take the kids.

- See the giant statue of Sam Houston off I45 in Hunstville. Exit the Interstate and go walk around.

- Visit the Texas Prison Museum in Huntsville. See "Old Sparky," the electric chair.

- Visit the Sam Houston Memorial Museum at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. Take the tour and walk the grounds.

- Go to the Mushroom Festival in Madisonville.

- Visit Camp Hearne, the German POW camp.

- Go to the Roundtop Antiques Fair during Antique Weekend in and around Roundtop, first weekend of April and October. You'll be blown away. Go early and expect to walk. A lot.

- Spend some time in the Roundtop and Burton area when it's NOT Antique Weekend. Take in the Cotton Gin, the historic buildings museum, and the concert hall. It's even worth sitting on a bale of hay and watching the t.u. drama department perform at Shakespeare at Winedale.

- Tour the Bluebell Creamery in Brenham, then eat at Dos Brisas in Chappel Hill, our only area five star restaurant.

- Visit the Old Baylor ruins at Independence. While there, stroll through the Antique Rose Emporium. Drive down scenic FM 390 to Burton during bluebonnet season.

This is a topic we tackle every summer here at KBTX. Last year we got several suggestions and ran the stories in our Brazos Valley Bucket List Summer special.

Here is a list of things that we covered and that people suggested.

http://www.kbtx.com/bucketlist

A lot of the video from the stories is no longer available on KBTX.com but if you type in Brazos Valley Bucket List on YouTube, they will all come up. Here is the list of videos.

The Brazos Valley Bucket List should be back this July so keep passing along things to see and do here in the Brazos Valley! I love being able to show people everything we've got to offer here in the Brazos Valley!

Thanks!

Huh?

These aren't in the Brazos Valley.

Brazos Valley: Washington Count, Brazos County, Robertson County, Grimes County, Burleson County, Madison County, and Leon County.

Well, I've got about 90% of techno's list under my belt.

I'd add the Texas Ranger Museum in Waco (especially for being along the Brazos). The pedestrian suspension bridge there in Waco also worth a visit, as is a tour of Dr Pepper.

Closer to home, I'd add in driving Scenic 390 during wildflower season.

Probably ought to put the Kolache Festival on the list, too.

And a whole weekend at Chillifest (but, that's a better idea when young and resilient).

If we're going outside of the Brazos Valley, then Lake Travis & the state capitol.

Dip in Barton Springs and supper in the Gristmill after "toobing" the Guad, and before a sold-out Gruene Hall show.

Then waking up a bit bleary in a gas station parking and having to squint to see if it's the Texaco on 306 or the Exxon next to the La Quinta in San Marcos. (Both have pretty decent coffee; only the former is famous in song.) And it only mattering is _which_ Herbert's Taco Hut is closer.

More properly on-topic: Getting a bunch of friends together and catching a great show on the grass at WPCA. Making a proper outing of it, with food and drink (and not leaving a mess--or going in the moat).

OK, Shane, maybe that's where I had the name stuck in the back of my mind. You media folks have that effect on people.

Seriously, though, I was thinking what are the highlights that somebody moving into the area (or even just visiting) should see and do. I wasn't thinking eating at a particular restaurant, but more along the lines of seeing the sights. Anyways, that's what I was thinking ...

Eh. KBTX has a "Sam Cam." That's good enough for me. If Huntsville ain't officially in the Brazos Valley, it's close enough to have its tourist attractions on my bucket list. Feel free to make your own list and exclude anything in Walker Co.

One of the worst whippings I ever got as a child was for having a pecan war with about 10 other kids on that stage. We accidentally hit an elderly lady.

On Aggie football, go to the Quad a couple of hours before a game. Watch the fish wildcat out of the dorm. Wait for the cannon.

I have taken out of town friends and family to the Twilight Concerts at Wolf Pen Creek and they are amazed our city offers that for free. We are lucky.
