Hello,

Staying at a B&B in Fredericksburg in March.

1) What would be the most scenic driving route from College Station to Fredericksburg?

2) Recommendations for eateries in the hill country area?

3) Recommendations for must-see attractions?

Thanks in advance!

You will have a wonderful time.

As for the places to eat I would suggest the Bluebonnet Cafe in Marble Falls and Bear Moon in Boerne. Boerne also has great little shops and other great places to eat as well.

As for attractions.....if you are into wine tastings there are several beautiful wineries along 290 and surrounding areas. Grape Creek, Perdenales Cellars and Texas Hills are all great and have beautiful places to sit, snack and take in a glass of wine.

Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park is also a great place to see.

Have a great time.

Most scenic drive would probably be to take the devil's backbone... Here is a quote from the texasescapes website:
quote:
From San Marcos follow RR 12 west of to where it connects with RR 32. The road runs the crest of the ridge called the "Devil's Backbone".

An unusually scenic drive, you will pass several roads leading to Canyon Lake. After 33 miles you will intersect with Hwy 281 - just a few miles south of Blanco.

From Blanco, FM 1888 west will take you to Luckenbach. Follow the signs on FM 1376 a short drive north to Frederickburg.

Luckenbach is a neat thing to visit, for a brief moment, to say you've "been there." Going there on your way would be a nice stop.

Other must visits:

-Enchanted rock state natural area
-As mentioned previously, the wineries, Becker Vineyards perhaps the best among them and also right outside Fredericksburg
-The National Museum of the Pacific War is in Fredericksburg, since Admiral Nimitz was from there
-The main street in Fredericksburg is a lot of fun little shops to peruse

Couple places to eat:
- Cooper's BBQ in Llano (go there after you visit enchanted rock)
- Auslander

Have fun.

Friedhelms is great for authentic german food. Ask to sit in the back bar area....the atmosphere is better. Hilltop Restuarant between Fredericksburg and Mason is awesome, but make a reservation. Be sure to drive the Willow City Loop. IF you are lucky the bluebonnets are in bloom and it will be extra beautiful!

I really like the drive from Independence (take 60 to 50, then hit FM 390 in Independence) to Burton, where you can hook in to 290. Lots of rolling hills and neat stuff like that.

I personally only eat at the Bluebonnet Cafe in Marble Falls for the pie but if you decide to eat there make sure to bring cash or check. They don't take plastic. My mom lives over that way and she recommends River City Grille in Marble Falls. You should also check out the Uptown Marble Theater for great music if you're over that way.

Devil's Backbone rest area is a great place to see the Perseid Meteor shower. Plan another trip in August!
