Wayne T. Rife in College Station did a really good job for us - we had serious problems. Good luck to you!

Joshua Benn is excellent!!! He has not only worked for homeowners but home owners associations that deal with builders and developers. He has been in business in this area a very long time and has a great reputation with both builders and the community alike so is good at making people what the right thing to do is. Davis Watson won a big case on the builder side a few years ago. I'm sure that experience would be helpful on the purchaser side too.

Dont want to overtake this thread but does anyone know of a divorce attorney that doesnt cost much?
I have a friend that is wanting a divorce but the cost is out of range of her checkbook. She and her husband have agreed to the split so there isn't any fighting. No kids involved.

To GinnyVJ - if your friends have an amicable divorce and do not have real property or have disposed of real property, they might be able to take care of this on their own. If they can agree on property division and it is not complicated, they could divide assets and liabilities, and file their own forms.

They could just hire an attorney to review forms they are going to file, or not. That's what I did the first and only time I went through divorce. I filled out all paperwork, filed all forms, and at the last minute my ex decided to get an attorney to review all.

The review was not needed. We did have a house. We split our own assets. No kids. I bought a book of forms for Texas Divorce for 10 bucks.

I am not a lawyer, this is not legal advice, just telling you how it worked out for me.

+1 for Josh Benn. Great guy who knows his business!

So far as low-cost divorces go:

Cletus "Cowboy" Davis used to do collaborative divorce, no fighting, pretty simple stuff. I think he still does. Less expensive than contested divorce, and is great when the parties are in agreement and there are no kids. 779-7200.

I am going through a divorce currently and there has been no real contention on asset split, child support, visitation, etc. The process was started by my wife in June 2011 and we are still working at it. I have paid my attorney $5225 up to this point along with another $500 for mediation. I was wondering if someone that has gone through a divorce with a similar situation can chime in on how much they spent on their attorney by this point and overall. Any other suggestions for good attorneys if it is deemed that I am spending to much and not getting enough in return. Thanks

Define "no real contention" if you have had an issue that required mediation, then there's some contention there on one side or the other. Back when I was working as a paralegal in family law (about 8 years ago), an uncontested divorce in our office ran about $1,500 plus incidental fees (filing fees, certified copies, getting property titles sorted out). If you've already paid $5225 and aren't divorced yet, there are either contested issues, or your attorney saw you coming.

Attempting to go through my divorce with no contest and no lawyer. We are pretty much agreed on the split and have kids but agree on the terms there as well. If we do end up sticking on a topic we may go to mediation, but I am hoping we don't. The only problem I have is how we "write up" the final decree on the split. The paperwork from the court does't account for all issues. Anyone have any advice on a DIY'er?

Not necessarily. There are some courts that require you to go to mediation before they will set you for a hearing. Some judges will waive the requirement if the attorneys agree that it wouldn't be successful at that time.

You can purchase the needed forms online and file the divorce yourself. I paid around $100 for the paperwork and filing at Brazos county was around $240. He signed the waiver and 60 days later I was divorced. As long as it is uncontested with no children or assets, there is really no reason for an attorney.

To the guy who's paid $5225 … you paid a tad, a big tad, too much.
Divorce attorneys are process and procedure experts.
Not disparaging them. That's just the name of the game & the role they play in it. Unless there is a major conflict, contested issues, or need to go to court, there is no justification for a divorce attorney to run up a huge number of hours, or even worse, charge you big hourly fees. $250 per hour is premium; $350 per hour is really out of line for divorce work. Don't pay it!

When my ex and I divorced we got the forms from a county website no charge. We agreeded on everything filled out the papers and filed at the court house in Bryan for $260. We had an initial hearing that only one of us had to be present for. The final hearing was four months later as required by the courts.
Wes Hall is a great attorney in CS. He is not a divorce lawyer per say but he does do divorces and worked a miracle for a friend. He is a family law attorney and negotiates contracts. If you are looking for some one to look over paper work he is also great.

We are mostly dealing with anger and resentment on her side and frustration and a bit of pride on my side. This action is not something that i wanted to pursue as she is the one that filed, but I want to get it done asap so that we don't take away from our ability to provide for our girls and then be able to step away from this mess to allow for healing to start occuring.

My exhusband and I had no children and the only real property was our house. We used LegalZoom.com for the paperwork. At the time, it was only $150 IIRC. Then it was just the filing fee for Brazos County.

Kyle Hawthorne did my divorce about 9 years ago. It was a total of 1700.00 with children and a few assets but nothing major. My ex didn't even have to appear, he signed and had notarized a waiver so he didn't have to appear and I didn't have to look at his face even one more time.

And for a real estate attorney, I would recommend William S. Thornton, Jr. or Fred Bayliss.

Y'all do realize that the post you were responding to was over a year old and the real estate issues are probably resolved and hopefully the divorce is finalized, right?
