Not really a hole in the wall, but Casa Rodriguez is our favorite.

This is only semi hole in the wall like casa rodrigez, but the place on South College near downtown is one of our favorite. It used to be ponces mi pueblito, but I think now is a coco loco restaurant.

I passed by Mi Pueblito last night. It is still there.

It is still open, but I think it is owned by coco loco or someone else now...the food is the same. It's very good.

My SO and I really like the enchiladas at El Sol De Mexico on MLK and Texas. We haven't had much on the menu, but everything we have had is pretty good. Green enchiladas and michaladas keep us going back.

El Sol is awesome.
Maggie's is awesome - at Texas & Coulter.
Mi Familia is the best breakfast taco in College Station, maybe in BCS.

EL Vale on WJB has best mexican shrimp cocktails you can imagine, and fresh tortas plus it's BYOB, just left the place few minutes ago!

Roberto's Taqueria inside Chevron on Corner of Briarcrest and Broadmoor, I believe he open Mon-Sun 7a-4p. Cash Only but owner is the cook and can make some killer gorditas plus make fresh tortillas everyday

Believe it or not Tacos inside Gas Staiton right across from Post Oak Mall are are very fresh with homemade tortillas plus loaded with meat!

Taqueria El Tio next to El Vale is also pretty good, fresh food and homemade tortillas!

The tortilla makes or breaks any TACO!!

For fresh Barbacoa and Menudo go to Carniceria La Perla (Meat Market) on Saturday and Sundays

For Pan Ducle go to La Michoacana!

Please don't ever include Casa Rod, Papa Prz or Los Nortenos on real mexican FOOD list!

Any other questions?

El Sol - especially at lunch.

However, I really miss the hole-in-the-wall places of San Angelo. Can't find that specific style of mexican food here.

el sol has free queso at lunch. It is very good. The bakery on 19th has the best sweet bread and the tacos are pretty good too. There is a place in downtown behind cash's food mart that is a holw in the wall that has a awesome quesadilla, it is where the old cotton storage barns are.

Amen to the guy who said don't include los nortenos, papa Perez and casa rod on real Mexican food list.
Those places belong on same list as casa ole, chuys, on the border, ect ect.
Food can be decent but its not real Mexican food.

El sol
Casa de Mexico- on 21
Are all very good.
lots of little hole in wall type places on east side of downtown Bryan off MLK and WJB that are pretty good

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Sorry, great as they may be, those places are also not "real" "Mexican" food.

I'm not sure if either of them have an actual name, but there's "shady taco stand" off of MLK and Main, near downtown bryan. Open 24 hours and surrounded by barbwire. You eat outside in a parking lot with tables.

The other is directly across the train tracks from the Texas/21 intersection. It is an actual sit down.

At both of these locations you are lucky to have more than 3 english words understood and it's impossible to spend over 5 bucks a person.

So which are "real" mexican food?

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Ok Mr. I know it ALL (Newbomb_Turk) where are the real mexican food places here in town? I understand is NOT real mexican if you are comparing them to places in actual MEXICO but some of the ones Cypress Ag mentioned are as close as you are going to get.
Newbomb_Turk

Mr. 2000 - All of these places mentioned - no matter how large or small or run down or what part of town they are in - are still Tex-mex establishments. Some of the dishes at Abuelo's are much closer to actual "Mexican" food. Look it up. I am not running down any of these places or their food. I enjoy my Tex-mex from the dives on up.

This thread comes up every now and then, and I am shocked nobody has yet mentioned El Tio on North Bryan Ave.

El Tio gets my vote. Real tacos and quesadillas, fantastic! And they are open until 2am.

Please Please tell me you are kidding when you say Abuelo's has a better chance on real mexican food? How can you say that? I grew up in South Texas and ate across the border for many years and I can tell you some of this hole in the walls get close with the Gorditas, Tortas, Tacos not too much with the enchiladas or other main dishes as Chile Rellenos.

El Tio, was mention by Cypress Ag on this same thread
Newbomb_Turk
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I didn't say Abuelo's was good.

Good article on the subject:

http://www.helium.com/items/1186475-differences-between-mexican-food-and-tex-mex-food-authentic-tex-mex-food

What we know as Mexican food is Tex-mex and is descended from Mexican peasant/street food right across the border. Depending on what part of the country you are from, Mexican food can be primarily seafood or chicken. They don't use a lot of cheese in their dishes.Did you know that the crispy taco shell and fajitas are American inventions?
firefly1204
How long do you want to ignore this user?
El Sol de Mexico!
dh is "From the Valley" and very picky. We love their fajitas best of all.
betas2000
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yes I'm very aware of the fact that fajitas and the crispy taco along with everything on Taco Bell's menu was invented in USA.

They use other types of cheese in Mexico mostly goat cheese like queso panela, nothing like Sharp, Colby, Swiss or even Monterrey Cheese.
Newbomb_Turk

So then what are we arguing about? Remove the stick, Mr. 2000. I really don't care what it's called as long as I like it.
betas2000
How long do you want to ignore this user?
My point was that some of this hole in the wall taquerias found in deep bryan even some of the taco trucks that are popping all over bryan are as close to real mexican food you are going to get around here. No arguing just my point of view.

You keep enjoying your tacos al pastor at Papa's and Abuelos

I go to Abuelos and like it but I don't think of it as "real" Mexican food. The ones in "downtown" or west of downtown Bryan are the best for "real" mexican food. You just have to be interested in trying new things and don't have a problem going to places where most of the people (wait staff and customers) don't speak much English.
