I've got a bunch of oil left over from frying a turkey, and I don't fry often enough to make it worth keeping (to me.) Do I just take it to the dump, or is there some place that would reuse it?

Any ideas? I don't really want to deal with Craigslist.

Unless you know someone who wants it, your best bet is to pour it back into the container it came in, seal it up, and then put it in the trash.

Give it to your friend the diesel owner as a present. Call it a "fuel additive".

If you or a neighbor has a compost pile, you can pour it on it and mix it in and it will decompose is short order. it's actually great food for earthworms in small quantities.

OMG, seriously??

Whatever you do, don't put it back into the earth where it came from, it might ruin the earth.....huh?

uh...vegetable oil comes from the earth?

Most all vegetable oils come from the seeds of plants, hence not mineral, animal, but vegetable.

I suppose that some of the turkey frying oil has liquified animal fat in it from the turkey, but that would not harm a compost pile either....lots of dead animals in a compost pile.

Mineral oil comes from the earth as well... but I don't advocate dumping it...
I will be out working on Tuesday... I can swing by and pick it up. I have recyclers that pick up my waste oil and I can just dump it in the tank for you.
Just call Jenny at Freedom Oil Service (In the phone book) and she will schedule a time to stop by.

Oilguy, that's great, I'll give ya'll a call tomorrow.

Biggydogg, I'd add it to my compost pile, but I've already got a raccoon problem, so I'm reluctant to add anything greasy to the mix- they'll just make a ruckus eating it.

The City of Bryan accepts used frying oil for free. Drop it off at thier oil recycling station 1111 Waco Street (next to MLK and Hwy 6).

Yes big, everything comes from the earth in one form or fashion. We do not import.....yet, from other planets.

Not to derail the thread but I'm curious...

Biggydoog, do you actually put animal products and fats/oils/grease in your compost pile? Do you get good compost from that? I have always seen it recommended to NOT put any animal products in a compost pile because they will attract vermin, break down slowly, cause odors, etc. I stick with green waste (veg scraps, grass clippings, etc.) and brown waste (sticks, leaves, etc.) only.

A little amount of vegetable oil won't hurt a compose pile at all, it will even feed the organisms. Even if there is a little turkey or whatever fat in it, there is no harm other than attracting bugs and animals. A compost pile has millions of "animals" dying daily incuding earthworms, roaches, etc.

Realize that a mature native pecan that drops 500# of nuts will drop about 15 gallons of vegetable oil under its canopy every year.

I wouln't pour 10 gallons of pure pork lard mine though

Thanks for clarifying, biggydoog. I was defining "animal" a lot more narrowly than you.

Happy composting!
