This board is all about being pro business as am I.

But on this one shop the day ahead, cook yourself, and don't go out to eat. Kill the demand on christmas so those employees that got forced on the schedule dont have to be there next year.

Employers, If you do stay open quadruple your prices and then quintuple your employees pay for the day. Because you know they would rather not be there.

Finally someone said it.

Yeah, they may pay time and a half, but where are the board of directors/upper management/owners? With their families.

I own my own companies, but we are not open on Christmas Day or Thanksgiving Day nor will we ever be for a dollar. It sickens me.

Go buy a freakin pizza and put it in the over if you don't want to cook.

I know people will not agree but this is the way I feel.

We are just open Christmas Eve, never on Christmas Day, for the same reason.

Okay, it is not that I don't want to cook it is that I have no one to cook for. Consider yourself lucky if you have family and friends in the area that you are able to spend Christmas with.

First off…SER, I am very sorry that you can’t be with your family during the holidays. I wish you could be.
Merry Christmas to you and hope you are able to enjoy your Christmas. Cooking for just yourself does not have to be a chore. There are many many ideas that are simple, easy and delicious. I suggest maybe explore the options available for a simple home cooked meal.

But……..I do agree with OverR and mymainname3, I think it is very pitiful for businesses to be open on Christmas. As long as people patronize these establishments the powers that be will continue to force people on the schedule.

It is not so much the Chinese resturuants that are open that piss me off.

But when Wal-Mart opens or the chain food places open, that gets to me. The Board is all nice and warm and spending the day with the family while the employees at these places are working. I think the Board should have to work if they decide to open.

But, this is what it has come to. I have always said we will know when the founder of Chick-fil-A dies, they will be open the next Sunday.

Some people don't celebrate Christmas and want to work. It's unfair for some of you to assume that all people working at businesses open on Christmas Day are being forced to be there. I know of several businesses who ask for volunteers to work and if they can't find any, they don't open.

There are many persons who are struggling to pay regular monthly bills, medical bills, education, supporting elderly parents, etc. that are willing and want to work holidays, especially for 1 1/2 or twice their normal pay.

I would like to clarify my earlier post
quote:
Some people don't celebrate Christmas and want to work.

I know this and I am ok with it

quote:
I know of several businesses who ask for volunteers to work and if they can't find any, they don't open.

This I can see and appreciate

This I also understand and there was a point in my life when I was one of these people, you do what ya gotta do and that speaks volumes of a person

I simply do not like the people that say, we are gonna be open on Christmas day and you are gonna work or you can find another job. YES there are companies like that and there are some right here in our area. So, I do not patronize restaurants on Christmas day.

Hope that clears up my earlier post

SER - It will be just my husband and I on Christmas Day. Our son is coming to visit but won't arrive until Dec. 26.

We went out to Haiku last year, but I've decided to cook this year. We'll have plenty of food. Why don't you join us? It would be wonderful to have guest.

I have worked many holidays in foodservice. To be honest, it is always a great time. Never felt sorry for myself or others I am working next to. Customers are in a good mood and we are happy to be serving.

While in college, I often worked on Christmas Eve, Christmas and other holidays because we usually got time and a half, or, in restaurants we got great tips. Never kept me from celebrating or attending church!

It's just another day, Jesus wasn't even born in Decemer. If you need to work on Christmas Day, spend Christmas Eve or the day after with your family. There is nothing about the 25th which makes it special. If you work on Christmas, you have an amazing opportunity to bring some happiness to the lives of those you are serving. God bless those who are productive on holidays so others can enjoy their time off.

I agree with both sides. I've been called into work on holidays in the middle of dinner before, so I know how that feels.

But now that I live in TX with all my family back home it doesn't bother me. I actually cover for people so they can eat and stuff on holidays. I'm older now and have bigger problems then having a day off, gotta do what you gotta do to make ends meet. On that note though, if someone volunteers to work for the company on a holiday shouldn't they be allowed a day away from work for something they feel is special? I cover the job on Xmas, you let me have next Friday off for blah blah blah...
CrottyKid

^I like that idea. You get a floating holiday if you volunteer for Christmas.
OverR
How long do you want to ignore this user?
that's a great example of the right way to do it. However, we all know it does not always work that way. Which is why I will not be patronizing a business on christmas willingly (cant help a tow). If someone did get forced it won't be my fault and I hope the owners pay a top dollar wage for those that are at work. Part neccesity and part generosity. I know it's the market working but I feel for those that have to be there.

Merry Christmas

I don't blame you OveR. Companies like mine or JohnGause don't count though. Most of the time we are working from home anyways. Today and tomm I will be glued to my Playstation waiting on my phone to ring, so it's not like we are waiting tables away from family all day. Unless I get sent out of state or something, that's different though haha.

That' right close your doors the day before the holiday and stop consumer spending. What are they thinking?!

People should close their businesses so everyone can go home and veg. I am sure one less day of consumer spending during the busiest holiday season will be fine.

My husband works on call, and it is hard because we never know when he's going to get called. One of his coworkers volunteered to be available Christmas day because his wife has to work all day and they don't have kids (young, newlywed couple). I thought that was nice. Daddy needs to be home on Christmas morning to see what Santa brought. My husband will do the same for him for New Year's eve, because they will probably want to go out and we're old fuddie-duddies and new year's means nothing to us.

That's exactly what I mean MommaBear! Most of the guys I work with have kids and family coming in so I cover for them and they cover for me one day. Good for your husbands company!

We close at 3pm today. And closed all day tomorrow. Same goes for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

It's been like that since day one but someone earlier made comment about, "once the original founder is gone they will change that." I'm afraid that will happen with our company
