Where is the best place to find this in B/CS?

I grew up eating Catfish King a lot. If you know what that is, please help me find something like that. This is not a thread asking whether you think Catfish King is good or not. I'm just asking where to get some around here. Thanks!

I think I have perfected a recipe.

It's a chain restaurant in North Texas, Oklahoma, and maybe Arkansas.

Feed Barn has hushpuppies?

Ok, what was the name of the all you can eat catfish shack out on 2818 that burned down one night for three days? Hate it when my CRS has decided to kick in.

Dang, I need to get back over there.
I miss working down the street and being able to hit up either the CFS special on Thursdays, or the steak special on Fridays.

My favorite thing at Catfish King (besides the fish)is the chow-chow, a southern delight a hot tomato relish. Great stuff with the beans!

Crap! It's 11:38 and suddenly I am starving!

Feed Barn is good and you get 2 fried corn nuggets with the hushpuppies.

I used to work at CK in Greenville when I was a senior in high school. It was pretty simple stuff; 2 parts corn meal to one part flour was the mix. I didn't care for the hush puppies too much and they weren't made from scratch. But the catfish was really good. Probably because it all came from farm raised sources, was flash frozen and sent to the stores. We also had to filter the oil every night and replace it every couple of days. The tomato relish came in 5 gallon buckets and it was good. My favorite was the frog legs though.

Having said all of that, I don't think that we have anything like that here. There's no chain store production and that had a lot to do with the taste of everything at CK.

And FTW, do not go to Frank's Country Store to get Catfish. In fact, just forget that you ever heard of the place.

Good suggestions, but sadly, none equal Catfish King. Hmmm....road trip time?

The best catfish within a driving distance is Vernon's as you go into Conroe. We drive over there a few times a year to shop at The Woodlands and make it a point to eat there. It is the best I have eaten.

Franks out 1179 has good catfish on Fridays.

College Station Seafood used to be good many years ago but, to me has gone down. The last time I went there a couple of years ago the fries tasted like fish and were oil soaked. I asked for the manager/owner and she came over. After I told her the deal she just shrugged her shoulder and said, Oh, the kitchen must have not changed the oil and cooked the fries with the fish. and she turned around and walked off. Never a, let me get some fresh, I'm sorry, etc. Never again.

CK is very good. I think that if someone opened one out on hwy 6 near University Drive they would do really well.

I think it would go over very well just about anywhere on 6.

capnmac...are you referring to the Country Kitchen on Hwy 60...that was the BEST place for catfish, hushpuppies, their beans and coleslaw were amazing....it's been alot of years that that place was burned....

Agree with Biggy on Vernon's. It's the only place I've found within reasonable driving distance to get decent catfish around here.

If you're craving CK hushpuppies, I've seen them for sale in the frozen section at Brookshire Bro's grocery stores - jalapeno and regular. They may sell them at HEB or whatever, but Brookshire's is the only place I've personally seen them.

Ah, thank you, nana--that was it exactly.

A wit emailed me last night that CFS will prevent CRS--whippersnappers!

I grew up eating Katfish King, and it's just not the same, locally. We had "fish frys" at least once a month, back home, and when I didn't have restaurants I had 'em here. I'm just redneck enough to have driven the family to Vernons for a Fathers Day meal, because I really miss that style of fried fish. If it didn't kill my fryer oil it would be on my menu!!

THE best fried fish was at a little dive on Hwy 21, between MLK and Texas, but it closed down about 8 months ago. I do like Shipwreck's and Crazy Cajun's, if i
I'm craving, if that helps.

I too grew up on Catfish King, the ones in Tyler and Lufkin. Took em for granted but I miss em now. How does the catfish at Junek's honestly compare? I've been underwhelmed by most everything else there but I keep wanting to find something that I love since it's so close to my house.

Sounds like what was on the menu at my house on Saturday.

Sodolak's has decent catfish. Vernon's is good, but a decent drive for food. Catfish King was the bomb when we got to go there back when I was little and living around Tyler.

We do David Beard's Catfish King every time we go back home to Longview. But at 3 hours away, it's not something we get very often.I hate to say it, but Cotton Patch actually does a decent job with their catfish, but I really do like the fish at Shipwreck as well.

CK has great fish, but their old version of a "hushpuppy" was awful! I laughed every time at the "fried tube". To get a real hushpuppy visit the Southern Hushpuppy Olympics in Lufkin this month. Or try this at homeThe First (1972) Winning Hushpuppy Recipe Cecil Davis/Wichita Falls, TX

1 cup flour
1 cup yellow cornmeal
1 1/2 tablespoons baking powder
1 tablespoon salt
1 well-beaten egg
3/4 cup of milk
4 small chopped jalapenos w/ seeds
4 tablespoons chili meat
1/2 cup chopped onions
3 chopped boiled shrim
