Who all has taken Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University? What did you think? Has it changed your household finances?

My SO and I have heard good things about it and are wanting to take the course. I have been curious to hear how it has impacted people who've taken it.

Have not taken the course but used to listen to his radio show back in Lubbock. He makes a great deal of sense. If more people listened to him, we would be better off.

It is a truly rewarding and common-sense approach to getting your finances in order. If your spouse is on board (as it appears) and you are both committed to following the seven Baby Steps your life will change for the better in every way- not just financially. I highly recommend this program. Remember to live like no one else now so later you can really live like no one else. There is only one thing I can think of that is more exhilarating and satisfying than being debtfree. Go figure!

I did the audio books/audio course and found that it was good information, but nothing that I didn't already know. I feel like I'm pretty money/finance savvy, so for the average Joe I think it would be helpful. Certainly you do not have anything to lose by listening/learning it.

If anyone is interested in taking it, Parkway Baptist Church is hosting it starting in a couple of weeks. I think it will be Sunday nights. You'll have to call the church for specifics.

I think it's $80 or $90 for the class (individual or couple, 1 set of books)

I think that the course is good if you need to be nudged or shoved in the direction of paying off debt and saving for retirement. If you are already doing that, not sure what you will learn that you can get from the Ramsey FB page.

Our only debt is our mortgage and we pay our credit cards in full each month. We also have an emergency fund and college funds for each child. We did these things without the Ramsey's help.

As others have said, you can find everything that you need to know about the program either on DR's website or by reading his book. Attending FPU gives you some structure and accountability in walking through the baby steps and allows you to see DR present the material. He is a very talented speaker, and you will leave each lesson pumped up and excited. I recommend his principles to all my clients and use them in my personal and business finances.

I'm a fan. Have not gone through FPU, but have read his books and bought them for others.

Big discussion on him over on the B&I forum. Some folks are not fans over there, so take what they say with a grain of salt:

I took it several years ago. Due to job changes and a LOT of medical bills in the last few years, we are not where we would like to be, but are working towards that goal. We have tapped the Baby Emergency Fund multiple times. Mostly for either medical expenses or vehicle repairs.

My wife was unable to attend with me, and I think it helps if you both attend. It's easier to both be excited about it when you aren't trying to relay info second-hand.

Yes, it is mostly common sense stuff, and sure people already do it, but for the most part, people DON'T do it. If they did, we would not have had the huge mortgage crunch we had with this Recession, and the credit industry wouldn't have as many problems if people had not been "spending like a drunken Congressman" for so long.

I enjoy his radio show. I'll stream it at work sometimes because it's hard to pick up on the AM San Antonio station, which is how I hear it in the car.

What happened to his nightly show on Fox Business Network (DirecTV Channel 359)? I figure he just got tired of it, but maybe Fox wanted to go a different direction.

I'm amazed on his show at the jams that people get themselves into with just shear stupidity. $200 trips to Wal-Mart and Target every weekend to buy crap they want but don't NEED. And all on credit.

I'm also amazed at what people will do to get out of debt, and how much they are able to clear in a short time. It's amazing.

I did FPU and loved it. I think it's smart, common sense stuff that sometimes you need you just need someone to lay out in front of you for it to click. I would highly recommend, and great if you would do the class together as a couple. I think it can help you set a good financial foundation.

It is well worth your while to take this class...even if you know a few of the techniques used in the program, it puts a whole lotta stuff in your financial world into perspective.

My husband and I attended FPU last August and it was a great experience. Yes, a lot of what Dave says IS common sense, he just puts in an order that is easy to follow and gets the most done with YOUR money in the least amount of time. (the debt snowball)

And even though we were not thousands of dollars in debt with credit cards, we still sold the vehicle with the note attached and what a difference that makes. We now own two paid for vehicles that run great, have an emergency fund, no credit card debt and are about to start funding the 3-6 month living expense fund. We only owe on our house. And yes, it can be hard from time to time and there are days that I think it sucks to not be able to get what I want when I want it......but it is worth it in the end. Both ppl have to be on board and want to make a change. I would recommend that you attend a class, it does get you fired up and excited to do something and the excitement you get when you can tell your classmates the following week of what you accomplished make it worthwhile. Good luck!!

Great class! Love the envelope system. Really enjoying the cash discounts at places (especially in this tough economy)!

Credit cards are for suckers... Dave ROCKS! This class is well worth taking, and taking again a few years later when you are in a completely different situation. My trophy wife and I took the class many years ago, and have also facilitated several classes since. It will change your financial outlook for the better, BUT it only works if you want it to.

I'm two months away from being clear of credit card debt. The only loans I will have left are my car payment (10 months) and my mortgage. I can't wait to be clear of that CC debt!

I was talking with a friend the other day and how his family uses the envelope method to keep track of discretionary expenses. I've setup a budget with Mint.com, but I think having envelopes for my grocery and dining budget would be good ideas.

Once some things in my life settle down a bit (ie. a divorce ) I'll be working on rebuilding up a nest egg. Getting rid of that horrible debt will be a great start in the right direction.

Charli,

Would you consider starting a thread that lists places that give cash discounts?

FPU is good stuff! Dave R is solid and straightforward. Go ahead and take the course if at all possible. Be sure to have your Spouse go also.

@dave99ag - congrats on the road to being debt free!

There is nothing better than having peace with you financial situation...and being out of debt and living below your means will definitely put you on that course...it will bring peace to other areas of your life also. We all for sure need more peace in our lives...

Best
James

Why? I get a free loan every month, I make several hundred in cashback rewards every year, I have have tremendous buyer protection and security, I have automatic insurance when I travel, not to mention all the other rewards/incentives.

My wife and I have been through FPU, and we routinely download Dave's Radio program from:

https://www.mytotalmoneymakeover.com/

We also went to see Dave live when he was in Houston last year.

Good stuff. It could change your family tree.

Act your wage.

Dave Ramsey is one of the reasons why my wife is graduating from Texas A&M University tomorrow without a single student loan to her name. (I wished I'd known more about Dave when I was going to school.)

Credit cards a for suckers for a number of reasons...

First, studies show over and over that people spend about 20% more on monthly purchases when using plastic over cash. Cash is emotional, and when you control your spending and see it happening every time you throw down some Jacksons instead of entering your PIN, you tend to be a bit more conservative in what you consume.

Second, CASH DISCOUNTS! Good God, man! Cash is freakin' king! EVERYONE loves having cash on their books, in their till, in their pockets TODAY rather than dealing with electronic transactions. Cash discounts work everywhere -- just pack some bills and ask. I've gotten incredible discounts at repair shops, tire shops, car rentals, airline tickets, furniture stores, all kinds of services (plumbing and electrical), for yard work, buying cases of wine, boxes of cigars, tailored suits, and the best -- MEDICAL! We get AWESOME cash discounts with our doctors. We even had a child at the CS Med and paid cash! And it was still cheaper than our annual insurance premium!

And third, CASH keeps you on a budget. It's easy to overspend with plastic, but you can control your money a lot better when you're looking at it face-to-face.

Plus, like the old-timers used to tell me as a young'un -- credit cards are for people who don't have money.

Just get out of the habit, take control of your money. Trust me (OK, trust Dave Ramsey) -- you are not coming out ahead by paying off your cards every month in exchange for cash back or trinkets or airline miles or whatever... Citibank doesn't own half the world by losing money. And let's not forget the classic line -- the borrower is slave to the lender.

Amen

I charge everything I can each month, about $2300.00.

I pay it off each month and I usually get 3 free nights at the Hilton per year.

If Citibank doesn't own half the world by losing money then why did the government have to bail them out?

I hate to break it to you, but millionaires don't get rich off 3 hotel nights a year. According to the information you provided, you charge $27,600 per year to get about $500-600 worth of free hotels (if that much). The risks just aren't worth it to me. Having someone else charge on my card (which has happened), having the cc company move my payment date (which has happened), having an emergency that I'll put on the card, but then not have the money to pay it off--all of these things are risks I'm not willing to take. I got burned by a cc company, and while I didn't have to pay anything and it didn't affect my credit, the experience made me so angry that I swore I would never use a cc again. I primarily pay for things in cash. It works for me.
