I have tried to do this myself in the past (and have found out it is not something I am good at)

Anyone know anybody that does this fairly cheap. (I know you can buy new blades for $15 bucks but I have a few and would like to save some money)

My experience is that most the time the chains are at the adjustment limit of the bar that is on the saw.

Just buy a sharpening kit...

don't forget to file the rakes down when you file the teeth...

In fact, if you want a slightly more agressive cut, you can file the rakes down past the guide. Don't take them down too far, though or you'll develop a bucking problem which can get pretty dangerous.

One method to get an agressive cut without the bucking is to file every other rake, or every third rake down to nothing...

go to bryan outboard on texas it's like $5.00 to have them sharpened.I go have mine done there all the time and they do a great job

Keeping those things sharp makes the sucky job of actually using a chainsaw SOOO much more tolerable!

You suck at sharpening chains?

Thats not a huge shocker, its not something that comes over night. It will take a few sharpenings to get the 'groove' down. Once you do, its pretty easy and only takes about 10 minutes. I suggest going to www.baileysonline.com and getting a sharpener called a Pferd Chain Sharp. It will sharpen the teeth AND the depth guage at the same time, which is what you want to do to do it right. Its all in one tool and it costs about 15 bucks if I remember correctly. If you are asking about it, im guessing your chain is noticably dull, so, this time, pay to have it sharpened to get it good and sharp. Then, after every other relatively large cutting job, run your new sharpener over the chain.

The key is to KEEP is sharp, not wait until its dull to sharpen...its much easier, plus, you won't end up like now....needing a saw and not having it sharp....

I always used Freddy Goehl to get mine done (Bryan Outboard) and he always told me that if your chain ever hits the dirt while it's running, the edge on it is gone. That's probably the most common reason for a chain to go dull when being used by a weekender.
