Does anyone else get terrible ping and/or packet loss when attempting to play online games in the evening? If I'm playing a game during off-peak hours or when most students aren't in town (like the summer/winter breaks), everything is fine. Other times (like right now), it is terrible. My ping spikes, I get constant packet loss, and some times it is unplayable.

I'm assuming this is due to suddenlink oversubscribing their lines and not being able to handle the additional traffic from students during peak hours, which upsets me as I have to pay the same price regardless of the quality of my service.

Get DSL.. no community pool of bandwidth to your house

Unless you can't get it at your house.

8MB cable doesnt mean squat if it is unuseable.

It doesn't appear to be an issue singular to SL.

I'll check it out tonight and see if the performance dips significantly. I did have to reboot my modem earlier this week. That's relatively unusual.

I agree, but that's not an option for me. It also was never a problem with suddenlink until the end of last spring. I naively thought that maybe they would upgrade their obviously inadequate infrastructure over the summer break but apparently I was wrong.

benMath08: I don't game, but there is a noticeable slowdown in the evenings. Sundays are the worst.

ditto - we just always thought our neighbors were downloading pron on the weekends

I'm not sure how it will affect latency, but DOCSIS 3.0 is on its way, as are 20-40+Mbps speeds from SL in BCS. It has been launched in other areas that you can search for on the Internet. Just FYI.

One the one hand, this sounds good. On the other hand, I've never gotten anything close to the advertised speed except during summer/winter breaks, so I'm pretty skeptical.

Obviously there are many factors involved and most depend on your location. I get fantastic speeds (I burst over 15Mbps on my 8Mbps today) and decent PING. Unfortunately YMMV with cable sometimes.

You get that with suddenlink? What part of town do you live in?

EDIT: I should also mention that I get terrible ping in the evenings despite a very low bandwidth usage (35 KB/s or less up and down). For the most part lately my max available bandwidth has been close enough to the advertised for me not to care, but the ping and packet loss issues make it extremely hard to play any online game, even when the servers are located in Dallas.

As the case is right now, internet is faster on my cell phone than on SL service. I'm getting <8KB/s. Not acceptable for what we pay a month.

have them come out and do a signal quality check on your coax line.... 99% of the problems related to crappy cable service is related to signal quality.

I am having 0 issues with my speed (and very rarely do.... I almost always get my full 8mbit speed) but I ran a dedicated brand new coax line to my cable modem.

I'm betting NDP doesn't game. Speed (or bandwidth) is less important than latency.

I'm not sure why you'd bet for or against me being an online gamer. I know latency is important; what I stated was I'm not sure if DOCSIS 3.0 will improve latency.

Similar issues here, but not quite as bad as yours! I pinged the area where my particular game server is and it's usually better than this. It's bad enough that I pay for and play a dinosaur of a game, but the lag..ugh!

Oh, and XBOX 360's are targeted toward the 18-35 age group...The demographics of video gamers are growing older as we do...

I have no idea how old you are. I don't have long guaranteed periods of free time to do nothing anymore, thus no more online gaming.

I am in south Bryan and Suddenlink is supplied by my apartment complex so I have no choice. It has sucked since I got back in August.

Gaming has been slower but it's not unbearable. Downloads have been MUCH slower and Youtube I can't watch a video without waiting for most of it to download.

Flickr is almost worthless because it only loads part of the photos. Many of them are just red-x.

I just keep thinking it's something SL is going to fix over time... obviously this is a heavy traffic problem.

They did just build that new complex over her, that Z-islander or whatever. Maybe the extra units are bogging down the system since they weren't there in the past.

My speed issues seems to be focused around peek times. I can't even browse the net then.

Now, when it's "fine" I'm getting ~70KB/s down. Still not what it should be.

Left suddenlink when I played EQ for the same reason. Last 2 years on EQ amd the following years on WoW on DSL have been fine, no issues.

While Ironic, has a friend in S.D. on Suddenlink too, he had same issues.

Everything seems good for me.

I have suddenlink in shenadoah in South CS with no problems. It took several trips for them to come out and tweek my cable system to get it right. Make sure they put the line to the cable modem ahead of as many splitters as you can.

This problem can also be caused by a bad splitter if your branching off to a TV. I'd call suddenlink and have them come out. Their phone support is crap but the techs that come out know their stuff.
