We just traded in our old car. Does anyone know if you are supposed to (or should) do something to make sure the license plates aren't listed in your name any more? I've heard stories of new owners doing something bad with the car they just bought, and the police end up at the former owner's front door.

1) take them off before you sell it...

2) fill out the Vehicle Transfer Notification

If you traded in your car to a texas licenced dealer, it's not a issue. When we "buy" the car from you and then resell it to the public the new owner will get new plates and reg. sticker to match. It's not a big deal. When doing a man to man sale, I would recommend remove the plates and sticker.

there is NO WAY I would leve plates on a vehicle - even if you trade in your car to a "licensed" dealer. Given some of the tactics dealers use I trust them no farther than I can throw them. ALWAYS remove your plates and dispose of them so you KNOW someone else will not end up with them.

I am a licenced texas car dealer. And you are sum aggie that hasn't got a clue. Don't put us all in the same barrel. I get cars all the time with the original plates. We yank them, chunk them, then put new ones on. Call me with any questions 979 324 5225 Jason
