The Brazos Valley Amateur Championship (City Championship) will be held August 15 & 16 at Pebble Creek Country Club. This is a 36 hole stroke play championship for Men, Women, Senior Men (55+) & Senior Women (55+). The entry fee is $150.00 ($125.00 if you choose to walk). 10% of the entry fee goes to the Brazos Valley Golf Association benefiting junior golf in the Brazos Valley. You must be a resident of Brazos County or any of the six adjoining counties to participate. The deadline to register is August 11th.

Entry forms should be in all of the golf shops locally by tomorrow afternoon. For more information, call Pebble Creek Country Club at 690-0990.

Special thanks to Budweiser for their sponsorship.

I must have put too much information on the original post to not get any questions and keep this on the first page.

Is there a minimum handicap that you must have to enter? If not, what would you guess the average handicap of the golfers who play in the tournament is? I am a casual golfer and was considering entering the tournament, however I usually shoot in the mid 80s and didn't want to be surrounded by 1-2 handicappers.
Thanks!

Who won last year?

Currie, I'm in the same situation. I'm a 9 playing like a 12 right now, but would break 80 at Pebble if I play decent. We're nowhere near competitive to win, but it would still be fun. I don't think my wife and kids share my enthusiasm, though...

From what I can remember there are number of really great golfers from the area, but scores in the 80's will definitely abound.

I'm about 5-10 strokes worse than you other guys but I'm going to play in this some day when the kids are gone and I can have time to work on my game rather than just play 3-4 times per year like I do now. There have been Aggie Men's Team golfers in this tournament in the past so that gives you an idea of the competition.

There are very few stroke play, "real deal" tournaments you can play in these days. Also very few pure competitions in any sport that you can participate in at my age. As bad as I am, I like the spirit of competition and playing it legal, doing something for real for once rather than a four man scramble where we can buy a half dozen mulligan tickets, shoot 57 and pound your chest about it, then pick up a diddy bag with a free golf shirt in some gawd awful color. I don't mind teeing it up against a scratch golfer, my theory is that you have two choices....you can work hard and try to get better at the game or you can continue to suck. It's the former that inspires me no matter how bad I am. I've played in stroke play tournaments in my 30's and 40's and I love the nervous feeling on the first tee. I may suck, but it's for real baby!

From a practical standpoint I would have no chance in hell to win the city championship, but technically we all have a chance. That's one of the great things about golf.

Sam Destefano won last year. He shot just shy of 150 for the two day total at Briarcrest. I doubt any of the Aggie golf team will play. They haven't played the last two years and have "bigger" fish to fry (mostly USGA events).

For those of you that have had at least 55 birthdays, there is a senior division if you desire a shorter set of tees. I can't promise that the competition will be any less. There are some very talented "senior" golfers in the Brazos Valley.

fishorgolf- Who was the winner of the female division? What is a competitive score in that division? I'm in the same boat as these men asking.

CMac,

If you are looking to spend some sponsorship money, we are looking for a title sponsor. Any interest?

By the way, great burgers.

The winner in the ladies division shot +/- 155 for the two days.

Thanks for posting the info, oldag.

Ronnie Hale is amazing....I'm pretty sure is mid-late 60's and he has always been a player, he could have given the youngsters a run!

Bobby Carroll is right at 50 and only finished 5 strokes behind the winner.

Looks like some of you would be right in the hunt, if not at least competitive.

CharlieMac- I'll sport any kind of SB gear you want if you pay for my entry! I want to play pretty badly (and I'm pretty confident I could come in at worst 2nd in the women's field), but I'm a broke new mommy.

Anyone needing an entry form can contact me at jbaetge@traditionsclub.com

All of the local golf courses should have them by now as well.

Anyone interested in a Two-Man Championship (four ball)?
@ggie
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm not going to be able to play in the City Championship, but I would be interested in a two-man tournament. Four-Ball match play would be fun.

I just wanted to remind everyone that the deadline to register for the Brazos Valley Amateur is less than a week away. Entry forms and questions should be directed to Pebble Creek C.C.

The club is very excited to be hosting this year's event and plans to provide a first class tournament experience.

Rumor has it that Traditions will be hosting next year's Championship. Participants in past events will have priority over those signing up for the first time. Hint....hint....

Yes, we will be rewarding those that have been suporters of the event.

For more information, please call the Pebble Creek Golf Shop at 979-690-0990.

$150.00 for two rounds at Pebble and a chance to play "REAL" golf....no mulligans....no gimmies....no handicap. Who knows, you might even win some $$$$$.
