Does anyone have a really good banana pudding recipe they can share? It is my husband's favorite dessert and I want to make it for him for his birthday.

I promise you that the best banana pudding I have ever had is at Sloppy Joes, on Texas.

Only thing I know is that it should have meringue on top, not whipped cream.

2 packages instant banana (or vanilla) pudding mix
1 cup milk
14oz can sweetened condensed milk
8oz container sour cream
8oz container cool whip
6 bananas, sliced
1 box vanilla wafers

DIRECTIONS
In a medium bowl, combine pudding mix and milk and stir until mix is dissolved. Refrigerate 15 minutes, until partially set.
Stir condensed milk into pudding mixture until smooth. Fold in sour cream and whipped topping. Fold in bananas.
Make a layer of vanilla wafers in the bottom of a 9x13 inch dish. Spread pudding evenly over wafers. Crush remaining wafers and sprinkle on top. Refrigerate until serving.

Believe me, it's good. Very rich, but good.

It was served at a local eatery not too long ago, in addition to some of my other sweets.

I would start by finding out who makes his favorite kind of banana pudding (restaurant/pre-packaged/mom) and then try to get that particular recipe.

I know that I like certain dishes, but am not a big fan of some recipe variations.

A friend of mine served us banana pudding prepared with sour cream (ate befoe I knew) and it was delicious. The sweetened condensed milk really hides the 'sour' taste.

I haven't ever tried this one, but I've wanted to because it sounds delicious!

I mean, it's a Paula Deen recipe, and it contains sweetened condensed milk and cream cheese? What's not to love? I also think that recipe posted by AggiePam sounds absolutely fantastic!

Holy smokes, that paula deen recipe looks like one I got from a friend, only it was pumpkin pudding. It is awesome!

Pumpkin Pudding

1 16 oz carton of heavy (whipping) cream
1 small box of instant butterscotch pudding
2 cups milk
1 can sweeten condensed milk
1 can of pumpkin (not Pumpkin Pie filling)
8 oz of cream cheese
1 box of ginger snaps

Beat the heavy (whipping) cream until stiff and set aside.
In a separate bowl mix the instant pudding with milk and set aside.
In a separate bowl beat cream cheese until smooth. Mix sweetened condensed milk and pumpkin into the cream cheese.
Mix pudding and cream cheese mixture by hand.
Fold whipped cream into pumpkin/pudding mixture.
Line a 13” X 9” pan with ginger snaps. Top with pumpkin mixture. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Top with additional ginger snaps just before serving.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
2 big boxes (or 4 small ones) of butterscotch pudding
10 banana's
2 boxes of vanilla wafers (buy the REAL ones)

in a pretty bowl, start layers with wafers (DONT CRUSH THEM) & slices of banana's and dont stop till you get to the top!

DO NOT USE INSTANT pudding. Make the pudding according to the box. Once its ready, gently pour over the bananas & wafers until its all gone. Cover with saran wrap. Throw in fridge for 2+hours.

Pumpkin pudding? Now that sounds almost too good to be true! I'll have to try that. I've also never had banana pudding made with butterscotch pudding, but it sounds like it would be really tasty. Thanks to the OP for starting this thread!

Shy away from banana-flavored pudding mix... let the bananas take care of that.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate all of the help. I have never been a fan of banana pudding and have never made it in the 18 yrs I have been married. I guess there is a first time for everything.

The best recipe by far is the one on the Vanilla Wafer box--Nabisco, I believe. It is simple and easy, not to mention delicious. Use this rather than some ersatz pudding mix(look at ingredients!). He will be very pleased!

I'm not much of a banana pudding fan, but this recipe from Southern Living Magazine is always a hit with my family and friends:

Over the Moon Banana Pudding

2 (4.6-ounce) packages cook-and-serve vanilla pudding mix
4 cups milk
1 (8-ounce) container sour cream
8 (2.75-ounce) chocolate-marshmallow sandwiches, cut into eighths
3 bananas, sliced
1 (8-ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed
Preparation
Cook pudding mix and 4 cups milk in a saucepan according to package directions. Remove pan from heat; let stand 10 minutes. Whisk in sour cream; let stand until pudding thickens.

Pour half of pudding into a 2-quart baking dish. Layer about 40 chocolate-marshmallow sandwich wedges evenly over pudding. Top evenly with banana slices and remaining half of pudding. Top with whipped topping. Arrange remaining sandwich wedges around outer edge of dish. Cover and chill at least 2 hours or overnight.
Note: For testing purposes only, we used Moon Pies for chocolate-marshmallow sandwiches.

Any good banana pudding has to have sour cream. It makes the difference. We use the same recipe as the first one posted....delicious.

Always make your pudding from scratch. It makes all the difference in the world. You can use the Instant Puddings when time is a factor but it's not the same. As for the sour cream...definitely optional. We do not use sour cream and have always had rave reviews (and never any leftovers) on our Banana Pudding.
