For the third time, our sprinkler head near the curb is broken(run over) and just spewing into the street. How can I catch the people parking on our heads? We have left notes asking neighbors to be careful to not park on the grass.I think our regular neighbors are careful, but visitors, etc. aren't so much. We live on a corner so we can't always see over there if someone is parked on grass. I guess we will have the sprinkler repair guy just move the heads. I don't know what else to do.

When they were still building our neighborhood, I was considering putting some rock art in the corner of my yard to keep people from driving over my yard. I never did, but I've seen it help others. A few large boulders strategically positioned might do it.

Put 4" steel spikes pointing up around your sprinkler head. Whoever has new tires the next day is the culprit.

Or you can create a small concrete ring around your sprinkler heads to protect them. Another thing you can do is buy the industrial sprinklers that they use on golf courses. That's what I did when I installed our system. Each one is all stainless steel and can withstand getting driven over. The only thing they can't hold up to is a direct hit from the spinning blade of a lawnmower. I had one that was a little too high and the lawnmower was set too low.

Our neighbors that live on the corner put bricks on the curb around their house. I wondered about it at first but then I remembered that they have a sprinkler system and the neighbor across the street from them was always parking in front of their house. It seemed to have stopped them. The bricks were placed perpendicular to the street.

We installed flexible hose between the sprinkler and the pipe on ours that kept getting run over. Works well...

Our neighbor always has lots of people coming and going and they seem to just take advantage of turning around in our driveway. We would not care but they ran over a couple of sprinkler heads and we had to fork out the money for repairs. We talked with the neighbor and told her to let her friends know that we do not like them to use our driveway as a turn-around. It has slowed down but not completely.

We live in an area where one would not want to put up a fence in their front yard but I had thought of putting up round metal post barriers that are about 4 inches or so in diameter, at each of the heads that are vulnarible. Don't want to do it too close though and break a pipe.

When you decide to do it, please post how you intend to solve your problem .

2 cinder blocks on either side of the sprinkler head. It may not look the best, but it'll do the trick.

Our house is on a corner lot on the inside an L shaped street, so people are always turning around in the bend of the street. My husband got tired of people running the curb and ruining the lawn. He had a HUGE Boulder placed on the corner to strategically make a flower bed. Not a single car has hit our curb since then.

I second BCS-Ag, flexible risers are the least costly, least apparent solution. Only about a dollar each.

+1 Boulder

Looks good if done right, solves the problem, crushes scissors while playing boulder, paper, scissors....

Just don't hit it yourself, or you might break the head again as you stomp around in anger.

God's Peace,
Chuck

Sprinkler repairman just came. Not only was the sprinkler broken, but the head was missing. He thinks they ran over it, broke it, and took it with them. He is putting in a swing pipe(???) under the head. Crazy! I think I want to try that spike idea.

jrhmc - I always wondered what the purpose of the bricks were - now I know.

My friend, who is also my sprinkler guy, replaced one of my sprinkler heads with some type of flexible tubing to prevent breaks like this.

BTW - he works as the maintenance manager for a local apartment complex and he is going to Las Vegas in a day or two to receive an award for being voted the "Best Maintenace Guy in America." Go Dennis.

TLIAC,

Wow, that is some serious sprinkler repair street creds! Fitting that he is being recognized in Vegas, a town that would shrivle up and die in three days, were it not for people like your buddy.

God's Peace,
Chuck

He does all kinds of stuff. He is getting the award from the National Apartment Association or something like that. He is also the husband of one of my best friends. I think it's pretty neat that he beat out the guys from the big cities.
