Back "in the day" it was from the creamery on campus. Then, the creamery closed its retail shop and sold their products through the Rosenthal Meat Science sales room on west campus. Best malts and shakes ever (a chocolate malt made with French silk ice cream was unbelievable). Later, the creamery completely shut down, and the Rosenthal center sold Blue Bell products and still made excellent shakes and malts. Now, I'm not sure, but I don't think they make them anymore.

What about the ice cream shops like Marble Slab or Maggie Moo?

The chocolate malts at Maggie Moos are pretty good.

There is also an antique store just down from Square One in downtown Bryan that has a soda fountain. I think they serve malts as well.

I would have to say that Corner of Time in Downtown Bryan has the best one by far!

I don't have a fav in this area unfortunately. It just reminds me of when I used to commute to Blinn in Brenham. I used to love to hit the gas station by the movie theater on 290. They had a large selection of blue bell and would do a shake or malt from any.

I didn't know that gas station in Brenham did malts! Oh well.

Oh, about the only thing the Southern Flyer has going for it is the name. That place was all sorts of "meh" each of the times I've been.

I like the malts from "Shakes" near Albertson's on University. However, I will check out some of the other places mentioned.

make your own malt at home with skim milk(choc., strawberry), low fat ice-cream (sugar free)

save the calories and the artery cloggers

My dad's house. My dad bought my step-mom an old malt machine at an antique store in Mathis about 15 years ago.

It has spots for five of the big stainless steel malt mixing cups to be worked at the same time.

We make all kinds. My step-mom makes a really good peanut butter malt.

Ive been making my malts for 15 years. If you don't use chocolate, blue bell, malt mix, and at least half and half, and other ingredients in teh right proportions, you just dont have a good malt. Its not an easy task to find a good malt. Im not aware of any in CS, but i havent been there in a while. Swenson's made pretty good ones. This is part of the reason i just make my own, because i can't find person that knows the differnce between a shake and a malt, much less one that can make one with any degree of competence. Also, if you do not receive the 'extras' in a metal canister with your malt....don't go back.

This is starting to sound like a 'high life' commercial.

Whoever said 'skim milk' in a malt....SHAME ON YOU! Its a malt, if you want a friggin health drink, go blow 15 bucks at smoothie king.

I don't know the difference between a malt and a shake, but Stover Boys makes a really good thick ice creamy drink thing, as does Fuddruckers!

The history of the electric blender, malted milk drinks and milkshakes are interconnected. Before the widespread availability of electric blenders, milkshake-type drinks were more like egg nog, or they were a hand-shaken mixture of crushed ice and milk, sugar, and flavorings.[9] Hamilton Beach's drink mixers began being used at soda fountains in 1911 and the electric blender or drink mixer was invented by Steven Poplawski in 1922. With the invention of the blender, milkshakes began to take their modern, whipped, aerated, and frothy form. Malted milk drinks are made with malted milk powder, which contains dried milk, malted barley and wheat flour. Malted milk powder was invented in 1897 by William Horlick as an easily digested restorative health drink for invalids and children, and as an infant's food.

The use of malted milk powder in milkshakes was popularized in the USA by the Chicago drugstore chain Walgreens. In 1922, Walgreens' employee Ivar "Pop" Coulson made a milkshake by adding two scoops of vanilla ice cream to the standard malted milk drink recipe (milk, chocolate syrup and malt powder).[10] This item, under the name "Horlick's Malted Milk," was featured by the Walgreen drugstore chain as part of a chocolate milk shake, which itself became known as a "malted" or "malt" and became one of the most popular soda-fountain drinks.[11]

Personally, and according to MANY people we've taken there, Southern Flyer in Brenham is NO WHERE NEAR "meh". Good food, fun atmosphere, and good people that own it. (No, its not me.)

Maybe the poster who didn't like it has just had an isolated experience, but they have GREAT malts and shakes!
