I'm looking for beginner classes for my son this summer. After years of competetive gymnastics, it is not fun for him anymore. He wants to try football in the fall, but I want him to stay active over the summer.
Any suggestions?

Taekwondo at The Martial Arts Center (Albertsons center on University Drive between Haiku and Verizon). Our son started there 3 years ago, and got us invovled. Good exercise and the kids lear a lot about self discipline and motivation.

+1 to you for looking into martial arts for your child!

I don't know the exact name of their studio, but the Palmisano's are wonderful people and they would be my first choice for my 11-yr-old. I think his name is Augie, hers is Donna. They are knowledgeable and good at martial arts, but beyond that they are just good folks.

+2 for The Martial Arts Center. Our son has been going there for about a year now and we are very happy with their program for kids. They stress self-discipline, personal safety, and respect for others. In my opinion, Taekwondo or Judo are the best martial arts for a kid because they teach defense, balance, and coordination. They have sign up going on right now for their summer camps, FYI.

Joe's Kempo Karate at Aerofit. He is wonderful with the kids. My son had a great time and learn so much from him. It's very affordable compared to some of the studios in town that charge a small fortune for classes.

Wow...thanks for the tips!

How many days/hours a week do your kids usually go and, if anyone is willing to share, about how much can I expect these classes to be?

MiMi...do those classes require an Aerofit membership?

No, no membership required. It's two evenings per week and we paid $30/month. He decided to take a break last summer so my numbers may be off now.

I highly recommend Palmisano's Taekwando. my 10-year old daughter (and my 39-year old wife) both train their several times per week.

Phone is 979-777-5574. Web is www.atapma.com.

The owners are VERY nice people who built a custom facility specifically for their business. They are excellent teachers.
