trim one of her front toe nails a little to close to the quick, that way it will be too sore for her to dig, but not so that she can't walk around.

We put down wire when a new dig begins for current pup.

Previously resorted to sprinkling cayenne (BIG bottles @ Sams) in the areas prone to digs.

Per Dogdchatforum.com:
Reasons why dogs dig

Digging is instinctive behavior for a dog. Dogs may dig for any of the following reasons

* They are bored
* It's fun
* They are hot
* They are trying to escape
* They are lonely
* They have excess energy
* You have put nice smelling (to a dog) fertilizers in the garden

If you can find out the reason for your dog's digging then you can usually find a solution.

To stop the digging try to alleviate the boredom.

If you leave your dog alone in the yard for long periods of time provide him with something to do. Leave him with bones to chew or toys to play with. Food dispensing toys are available or you can use hollow bones which you can fill with a tasty treat. Kong toys, hollow bones and such can be stuffed with a bit of spread cheese, spread meats, cheese cubes, hot dog chunks, semi-soft dog treats, canned dog food, kibble etc. Buster Cubes and similar toys have various compartments inside that hold kibble. Your dog has to roll them around or manipulate them to free the kibble. The dog has to work and chew to get the treat out. If you hide these toys, the dog also gets to enjoy the hunt and seek for a reward. Sturdy chew toys such as hard-pressed rawhide are also popular.

thanks that helps alot. It is probally a combination of being bored and lonely. I have to leave her outside when I go to school or work, and I can only have 1 dog where i live. (i would have adpoted the male that the shelter picked up with mine if i could have)

just a thought, but you could wrap its paws in gause and tape...

we had to make a cast for a calf once so I know it won't hurt the animal, but there will be no digging and they can still run and play just like always...

You can also fill the hole with their own feces.

We put chicken wire right under the ground where our dog was digging. She stopped. Really though- he/she is just bored. Do you have a friend with a dog you could take her to play with occasionally?

yea. I take her to play with the dog across the street when i can, but my schedule, and my friend's schedules don't match up too much

My dog just likes to dig. He doesn't spend much time outside and is usually not alone. I've thought about hiring him out because he can move an incredible amount of dirt in a very short time.

if you can fill the hole before they finish getting under the fence, they usually get frustrated with digging and that helps.....i have had great success with covering the filled in hole with human or dog hair.

Pinesol will stop the digging in the same area. .but not where you didn't pour it.. and who wants their entire backyard to smell like the elementary school bathrooms?

as far as having another dog. more fun for them both to dig .. it's a race.. considering ours haven't dug under the new fence yet, I guess i should count my blessings that i just have dogs instead of grass.

if swatting doesn't work, shoot 'em with a bb gun (only one pump. it will sting but not do any harm).

got my best dog to stop digging.

If you've never watched The Dog Whisperer on National Geographic, you should check it out. The bottom line is, dogs need Exercise, Discipline, and Affection in that order. If your dog isn't getting enough exercise, they will expend that energy some other way such as digging or tearing up your furniture.

I know you say you have a crazy schedule, but you're going to have to find a way to get that dog some exercise, ESPECIALLY if he/she doesn't have a playmate at home. A 20-30 minute walk a day will do wonders. On days that I walk my dogs, they are MUCH more relaxed and docile around the house.

We put their own feces in the hole and it usually stops it. Until of course we had a foster that ate his own feces, but that is a whole other story.

Otherwise, the dog probably is bored. Like someone else suggested, make sure you give it plenty of exercise when you are home and stuff to do in the yard when you aren't. Might help some.

Filling the hole with the dogs own poop will stop them from digging. I know it sounds gross but it works. It stopped my dog right away.

Definitely invest in some of the chew toys that you can put treats inside. Those and some large rawhide bones should keep the new pup busy for a while. Also try cycling other toys and leave a few out for him each morning.

Also - If you have access to the outer perimiters of your fence, you could stomp a moth ball into the ground every foot or so along the fence line. That worked pretty well for us. Just take a broom handle and push the moth ball into the ground really well after you stomp it, so that other dogs won't ingest them. Most dogs won't touch a moth ball to save their lives, but I get worried that there will be one freak dog that doesn't follow suit! lol

On "It's me or the dog" Victoria suggested getting a sandbox for the dog to dig in. Hide toys in the sand for it. Walking and exercising the dog should also decrease this behavior.

1984Consol...that wasn't even the worst of it but I will spare you the details.

I saw the sandbox trick on Its Me or The Dog too. It looked like a great idea for dogs that dig because they are bored, but she also said that they need to be walked in conjunction with it.
