Good place to get brake work done?

In College Station, preferably south side of town. I just need the pads replaced front and back and I have no tools (and don't particularly want to do it myself).

Cheap would be good, but I want them to do it right and not mess up everything like two different mechanics did to my old truck... replacing the front pads should not result in several hundred dollars worth of damage. Nor should they claim to have replaced things they didn't, or tell me something is fine when it isn't.

Stay away from Firestone. They will do brake repair for a good price but the work is terrible. I have taken my car several times back to them cause of loud brake squeals but they say it is normal. BS, I have had my car for 7 yrs, had 3 brake jobs done and this is by far the worst. The Dealership charges a lot but seems like they will do a decent job.

If anyone else knows of a good brake shop, I would like to also know.

Thanks

Also stay away from Midas in College Station. It took us 3 tries and a lot of money a couple of years ago to get our brakes "fixed."

In College Station, we've been happy with Sevcik's at Longmire and 2818.

In Bryan, we've really liked the Bug Clinic (I think it's on Cavitt, not too far from downtown).

Neither are specifically for brakes, but I think both do brakes and other stuff.

Do NOT go to Just Brakes in Bryan. They put my old brakes on wrong after I told them I wasn't going to pay them $400 for new brakes. They caused alot of damage to my car. Try Sears.

Sevcik's south, Pilger's north (College Station)

B & B Automotive on Coulter. Father and two sons run the place and are as straight shooting as it gets.

Superior Auto just did mine and it was a great experience. The guy at Ford told me I would need a lot more done for a lot more money. Dan at Superior told me that I didn’t need half of what Ford said and saved me a ton of money.

You can't find a more honest person than Dan at Superior.

Another vote for Sevcik's. A few years ago I did a brake job on this old beater truck I had and for the life of me I could not break the nut on the last pad. I finally gave up and drove to Sevcik's and asked them if they could finish the job for me. They had me pull over to the side and they let me use their air/power tools and didn't charge me a nickel to finish my own brake job in their parking lot.

Try Brake Check in college Station (NOT Just Brakes). They are a chain, but they have a very hometowny feel, and if you schedule your appt. ahead of time on their website, you can save 10-15% off the service. They worked on my '03 F-150 and my '65 Mustang, and I'm very pleased with their work...especially on such an old car.

Is Sevcik's still the place to go to get some brake work done? I believe my front rotors need to be changed.

NC, you can probably just get your rotors turned (on a lathe), unless you've had that done two or three times already or they're really badly warped. Usually a good deal cheaper than replacing them.

Timely! I need to get the same thing done. Where is Sevcik's for those of us too lazy to google?

Sevcik's is the Shell service station on Longmire just south of 2818.

Turning rotors doesn't really do anything, fyi, other than making the rotor thinner and tricking you into thinking that you've fixed something. For most cars, new rotors are cheapish, you just have to buy them yourself at NAPA.

If you have a small, older import, Bill LaBarge's Bug Clinic is the place to go (Texas A&M Sports Car Club sponsor as well). If you have a fox body mustang, contact me and I'll hook you up with my budy Wade (we put '98 Cobra brakes on my '92 5.0 a few months ago, and by "we" I mean "Wade". He's also the one that got Mr. Larlar's mustang running recently).

Disc brakes are silly easy to the pads on. I would google it, buy the one or two wrenches that you need, some brake parts cleaner and brake fluid, and do it yourself. For rear drum brakes, find a friend who knows cars. They look complicated, but are easy.

Another vote for Brazos Valley Automotive. I've never been disappointed in their work and their integrity has been evident to me more than once.

I, unfortunately, have an ABS system that needs to be flushed. The procedure either requires a special factory tool, or if you're cheap you can short two terminals on a $800 computer... and you need a pressure bleeder to do it.

No thanks, I'll pay a shop a couple hours worth of labor to do it. I already have the OEM parts I need; they really are cheap.

super = good point and good luck.
ABS systems have evolved and need some special attention. You can buy the "special tool" required, usually a module for a computerized analysis/diagnostic unit, but it's cost prohibitive for most DIY'ers. Give the money to a professional, smile and be polite and your car, and safety, will thank you later.

ID: Yep, for the few times I'd need it, the tools are out of my reach. I'm used to doing brakes on a motorcycle, where it's a simple procedure to pump the two separate master cylinders and bleed at the two direct-plumbed slaves using some aquarium tubing and a small wrench -- it takes 3 hands to do, but I've managed it several times on several types of bikes. But getting into computers and ABS pumps and pressure bleeding and pistons with teeth and all that advanced automotive stuff just kinda makes my head spin ... I'll happily pay someone to take care of it.
