Call an exterminator and have them spray your house, your yard, your garage on the same day. Also on the same day, take your dog to a groomer and have him bathed and dipped. Regular dipping can help keep fleas at bay.

If you don't do all of these on the same day, the fleas will just travel from one place to the other, then move back in via the dog.

Keep the pets outside where they belong.

Put Advantage on your dog and spray your yard with a bug killing spray like Sevin or something like that.

If they are in the house you are going to have to treat the carpets.

Fleas have been TERRIBLE this year because of the weather conditions. We've had problems for the first time ever with them. Just keep treating your pets with a good monthly topical flea medication to slow the fleas breeding down, give them all about a bath a week in flea dip for about a month...and treat your yard and carpet/house. Eventually, you can get them under control. You can also put a small amount of bakers yeast and garlic in your pet's food, and that seems to deter the flees from feeding, and they starve to death.

It takes a consistent approach, but you can wipe them out.

You shouldn't need to do flea dips with topical flea prevention. If you use something like Frontline Plus on your pets, it will kill adult fleas and eggs - keep that up monthly. To instantly kill them, get capstar from your vet. Do not bathe your dogs 2 days before or 2 days after application of a topical treatment. As far as treating the rest of the house... it depends on how bad it is. You may need an exterminator, or you may be able to get away with just treating your pets and vacuuming every 1-2 days (discarding the bag/trash after every vacuum).

have little ones?? If not I've found this approach works.....1st bomb the hell out of your house in carpeted areas espesially....stay gone for most of day of course. Then when you get back sprinkle Sevin dust over all carpeted areas and leave it. Just walk it into carpet for several days....on like 4th day....vacumm all carpets. May have to reapply Sevin in like a week...might not.

If you have kids or are a hippie and are afraid of pesticideds and whatnot, put a table lamp on the floor at night at turn it on, under the lamp, put a shallow dish with water and dish soap in it.

In the morning you'll have a dish full of fleas.

Not being a hippie myself, I opt for chemical warfare.

I had that problem BAD about 5 months ago. They're gone now. I vacuumed alot, treated the animal with a topical treatment and used a powder in the carpet a couple times. And then to top it all off I used the foggers to fumigate the whole house. Do it all within a couple days, put the treatment on the animal first to get them all off it. Then treat the house, usually want to treat the house more than once just in case, and to kill unhatched eggs that might have hatched since last treatment.

The fumigators are better than the bombs.

I was told that you could also put Diotomaceous Earth down on your carpets and your yard. It is bascially ground up sea shells. It is ground so fine that to people and pets it feels and looks just like a sandy powder, but has very sharp and ragged edges. When the fleas come in contact with it, it kills them by cutting them up. Again, it is so fine, you can just sprinkle it onto your carpets. It is all natural and has no insecticides.

Bomb, vacuum. Repeat again. Treat dog with good wah and Advantix or some similar topical. THen treat the yard. Then put dog on the flea pill. Hope and pray for a while.

Good luck. They are really hard to get rid of once they lay eggs everywhere.

Here's what the Dirt Doctor says:

quote:
Indoor treatment. Treat infested carpets with diatomaceous earth or boric acid, but don't overdo it. For heavy infestations spray D-limonene (citrus) products on carpets and furniture. Baking soda dusted on carpets will also help. Dirty, infested carpets should be water extraction cleaned or completely removed from the house.

You may try that route before chemical bombing.
